Tesla has a limited window to address a federal inquiry regarding the safety of its vehicle door handles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened the investigation in September after receiving multiple complaints about Tesla's door handles.

The automaker is required to submit detailed documentation and records to the NHTSA by December 10. The probe focuses on complaints that the flush-mounted door handles on Tesla vehicles may fail to function when the car loses power, potentially trapping children inside or preventing occupants from exiting after an accident.

Tesla must provide records concerning Model 3 and Model Y cars from 2017 to 2022, including information on door handles, latches, and associated software components.

Significance

Tesla represents a leading brand in electric vehicles, and any negative reports can impact public perception of EVs more broadly. Despite being the top-selling EV manufacturer in the U.S., Tesla has faced several setbacks this year. The Cybertruck has underperformed, and international sales, particularly in China, have declined sharply, with October marking a 36% drop in year-over-year sales.

Next Steps

The company may request an extension to submit records, but failing to comply fully or promptly could result in fines up to $139 million. Meanwhile, Tesla appears to be exploring modifications to its door handles. New Chinese regulations, set for 2027, will require mechanical releases on all door handles, eliminating flush designs. Tesla's chief designer has also acknowledged that making handles easier to open is a sensible improvement.
