On December 4, the U.S. Air Force received its 99th and 100th KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tankers at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. The KC-46A is capable of refueling aircraft both at single and multiple points in flight, supporting missions including the B-2 Spirit bombers involved in Operation Midnight Hammer against Iranian nuclear facilities.
"The arrival of the 100th KC-46 signifies a major milestone in enhancing our nation's global reach and readiness," said Gen. John Lamontagne, head of Air Mobility Command. "This aircraft embodies innovation and commitment to the mission," he added.
Manufactured by Boeing, the KC-46A is powered by two Pratt & Whitney 4062 engines generating 62,000 pounds of thrust each, allowing a maximum speed of 650 mph and cruising at 530 mph. The tanker spans 156 feet 1 inch in wingspan, measures 159 feet 2 inches in length, and has a maximum takeoff weight of 415,000 pounds. It can carry up to 212,299 pounds of fuel, 65,000 pounds of cargo, 58 passengers, and accommodates 18 pallet positions.
"Each KC-46A delivery tells its own story of dedication and teamwork," said Col. David Hall, program manager for the KC-46 at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. "This milestone reflects the commitment of everyone involved in modernizing our aerial refueling capabilities."
The Pegasus is equipped with defensive and self-protection systems and offers versatile roles, including transporting cargo and personnel, serving as an air ambulance, and conducting mid-air refueling operations. It was first deployed in 2019 and achieved certification in 2022 to support 97% of joint-force refueling missions. It can also operate with a minimal crew of two and refuel NATO aircraft.
In 2024, the Air Force successfully demonstrated the KC-46As long-range capability during a 45-hour mission over three days, extending its operational endurance and reach.
