Visitors can now purchase tickets to explore Inverness Castle, recently transformed into a public attraction. The extensive renovation of the former sheriff court and prison began in 2022, with an investment of approximately 47 million, according to Highland Council records.
The inaugural tickets for the newly launched Inverness Castle Experience are available for 10 December, with the venue anticipated to welcome around 400,000 visitors annually.
The renovation project, situated on a hilltop overlooking the city centre, was funded by the UK and Scottish governments, Highland Council, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. High Life Highland, which manages the attraction, has hired nearly 90 staff across full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions.
Once open, guests will embark on an interactive tour of the castle, discovering the rich history and folklore of the Highlands. Young visitors can enjoy a virtual companion, a dog named Cuillin, guiding them through the experience. The castle also features a bar and bistro for refreshments.
The Scottish Courts and Tribunal Service vacated the premises in 2020. The sandstone Inverness Castle, designed by architect William Burn, was constructed during the 1830s and 1840s on Castle Hill, offering sweeping views of the city and the River Ness. Historically, the North Block of the castle served as a prison.
