TikTok announced on Friday that it will adhere to Australia's upcoming ban preventing users under 16 from joining social media platforms starting from the laws implementation date, while warning that the changes "may be upsetting" for some.

The legislation, a first of its kind globally, will take effect on December 10 and impacts major social media services such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Companies that do not take "reasonable steps" to comply may face fines up to AUD 49.5 million (approximately USD 32 million).

TikTok confirmed it will block access for Australian users under 16 on the laws first day, meaning affected teens will no longer be able to create or maintain accounts. Existing accounts for under-16 users will be deactivated, and any previously published content will become unavailable to other users.

Young users affected by the restriction will be able to appeal by verifying their age through facial recognition, official identification, or credit card confirmation. TikTok emphasized that while these measures "may be upsetting," they are essential for compliance with Australian law.

The platform stated that affected teens will have several options, including verifying their age, downloading their data, deleting their account, or setting a reminder to regain access once they turn 16. TikTok also encouraged parents to discuss age verification with their children to ensure accuracy.

The Digital Freedom Project has launched a legal challenge against the ban in Australias High Court, arguing that it infringes on freedom of speech. The move has drawn international attention as other countries, including Malaysia and New Zealand, consider similar age restrictions on social media access for children under 16.

Analysis: TikTok’s Compliance with Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban

TikTok’s announcement to block users under 16 in Australia demonstrates the platform’s immediate response to the country’s groundbreaking legislation set to take effect on December 10. The move affects not only new accounts but also existing profiles, ensuring full compliance with the law.

The company outlined multiple measures for affected users, including age verification through facial recognition, official identification, or credit card confirmation. TikTok also provides options to download data, delete accounts, or regain access at age 16, reflecting an effort to balance legal obligations with user experience.

This law, the first of its kind worldwide, imposes significant fines on companies failing to implement “reasonable steps” to restrict underage access. TikTok’s proactive measures indicate an understanding of the high stakes involved and the need for clear communication with users and parents.

At the same time, the Digital Freedom Project’s legal challenge highlights ongoing debates about freedom of speech and digital rights for minors. As other countries observe Australia’s approach, TikTok’s compliance may set a precedent for international social media regulation.
