Top architecture award granted to Historic gardens project

The comprehensive renovation of Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens has earned a top accolade in architecture, being awarded the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland honor by The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).

Originally established in 1879, the gardens underwent a 28.3 million transformation that began in 2019 and reopened to the public in 2022. Competing projects included a 16th-century Highland tower, a bridge over the River Gairn in Aberdeenshire, and a multifunctional University of Edinburgh facility.

RIAS praised the Aberdeen project for demonstrating how architecture can enhance daily life. Located at the heart of the city, the gardens' redevelopment involved extensive landscaping, engineering works, and the installation of three lantern-shaped pavilions. Conservation efforts were also a key feature, with restored statues, railings, arcade arches, and Victorian underground toilets.

RIAS President Karen Anderson described the gardens as an "outstanding" example of architecture improving public spaces, noting that Union Terrace Gardens illustrates how thoughtful design can positively impact everyone who experiences it.

Paul Stallan, Design Director at Stallan-Brand Architecture + Design, referred to the gardens as the "beating civic heart" of Aberdeen, highlighting the importance of combining contemporary architecture with heritage preservation and landscape design. He emphasized the role of collaboration between Stallan-Brand Architecture + Design and LDA Design in achieving the project's success.

Local visitors have welcomed the transformation, praising the gardens as family-friendly and versatile. Emily Robertson commented on the increased amenities for children and the use of the space for festivals and events, while Dougie Bogie appreciated the expanded areas for activities. Darry Sukanya highlighted the tranquil and scenic qualities of the redeveloped gardens.

Plans to rejuvenate Union Terrace Gardens date back to 2007, with multiple proposals considered over the years. A scheme led by businessman Sir Ian Wood was eventually set aside in favor of a plan focused on improving the existing gardens, with official approval granted in 2018. Construction work commenced the following year.

The Andrew Doolan Award, established in 2002 in honor of the late visionary architect Andy Doolan, celebrates Scotland's finest buildings each year. Previous recipients include the Scottish Parliament building and Glasgows Burrell Collection.
