US official launches probe into Shein for potential severe violations of law: 'Could endanger millions of American consumers'

Shein, a leading fast-fashion retailer, is now under scrutiny in the United States amid concerns over labor practices and consumer safety. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a formal investigation into the company for potential breaches of state labor and consumer protection regulations.

The inquiry focuses on whether Shein employs harmful chemicals in its products and if its internal data collection could endanger shoppers personal information. According to Paxton's office, the company may have misrepresented the safety and sourcing of its merchandise, potentially putting millions of Americans at risk.

"Consumers have the right to buy from companies that operate ethically and safely," Paxton stated, emphasizing the importance of transparency and fair labor practices.

Shein has faced previous criticism regarding its labor standards. A 2021 report by the Swiss organization Public Eye revealed that some factories in China demanded workers to put in 75-hour weeks under harsh conditions. Additionally, the company acknowledged in 2024 that child labor had been identified in parts of its supply chain.

Environmental and Safety Concerns

Fast fashion is widely recognized for its significant environmental impact. The production of low-cost, high-volume apparel contributes substantially to global waste and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the fashion industry accounts for 2% to 8% of global carbon emissions annually, largely due to the use of synthetic fabrics such as virgin polyester.

In 2023, Shein reportedly produced 6.3 million tons of greenhouse gases, primarily from virgin polyester usage. Previous investigations, including one by CBC, found that certain Shein products contained dangerously high levels of toxic substances, such as a toddler jacket exceeding safe lead limits by 20 times.

The brand has also faced criticism for exaggerating its environmental initiatives, marketing clothing as "green" despite the items being non-recyclable.

Ongoing Criticism and Industry Response

Shein's business practices continue to attract attention from advocacy groups and competitors. thredUP, for instance, criticized the company for excessive production that exacerbates both labor exploitation and environmental harm. Additionally, authorities in China and U.S. lawmakers have examined the company's data collection practices following multiple user privacy concerns.

Consumers are encouraged to recognize greenwashing and consider sustainable alternatives such as secondhand or slow-fashion options, which can significantly reduce environmental impact and save money.
