Cincinnatis riverfront may soon feature playful pigs in the air, a riverboat adorned with flying pigs, or climbing structures shaped like flowing ribbons. These concepts are part of the newly released conceptual sketches for a playground at Sawyer Point Park, intended to replace the 1000 Hands Playground that was destroyed by fire in November 2024.

"This is a once-in-a-generation chance, and we want to make sure we get it right," said Parks Director Jason Barron in a statement.

To gather public opinion on potential signature features for the playground, Cincinnati Parks has launched a survey open until December 14. The current ideas were inspired by feedback from a previous survey, which attracted nearly 500 responses.

The new playground is planned just south of the former 1000 Hands location and east of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge. Officials aim to finalize the design by early next year, with a target opening in spring 2027. Funding for the $2.1 million project will come from a combination of public and private sources.

Analysis: Reimagining Sawyer Point Playground

The conceptual designs for the new Sawyer Point playground show a clear intent to blend creativity with public engagement. The proposed features—including flying pigs, a themed riverboat, and ribbon-shaped climbing structures—reflect both community input and a desire to create a unique city landmark.

The public survey, open until December 14, will play a crucial role in shaping the final design. With nearly 500 responses collected from the initial survey, Cincinnati Parks demonstrates a commitment to participatory planning and ensuring the new playground meets community expectations.

Funding for the $2.1 million project combines public and private contributions, highlighting collaborative investment in urban recreational spaces. With design finalization expected early next year and an opening targeted for spring 2027, the project timeline appears realistic, allowing adequate planning and construction time.

Overall, the initiative represents a strategic effort to replace the 1000 Hands Playground with a modern, engaging, and community-backed space that can serve as both a local attraction and a symbol of Cincinnati's creative spirit.
