Key Points:
- Reports suggest the President will soon instruct federal agencies to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug.
- This action doesn't fully "legalize" marijuana, but it will ease restrictions around it.
Tilray's Stock Surges
Shares of Tilray Brands (NASDAQ: TLRY) skyrocketed this morning, climbing by as much as 25% by 10:15 a.m. ET, with an even bigger increase during the early trading hours. The surge was driven by news linked to President Trump's potential marijuana policy change.
President Trump's Potential Move for Marijuana
While still unofficial, reports from The Washington Post this morning suggest that President Trump is planning an executive order that will direct the Justice Department to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III, effective as early as January. This change would reduce the regulatory burdens surrounding marijuana, aligning it more closely with the way prescription painkillers and other substances are treated, rather than substances like heroin or LSD.
What This Means for the Marijuana Industry
Although this shift won't legalize marijuana or even fully decriminalize it, it would open the door for easier access to banking services for marijuana businesses and reduce the tax burden they face. Moreover, states would have more freedom to regulate marijuana without federal interference.
How Tilray Benefits
For Tilray, the change in federal classification would likely ease the business environment for marijuana companies, stimulating demand and potentially boosting sales and profits. However, it's important to note that despite marijuana being legal in Canada, where Tilray is based, the company has struggled to turn a profit since 2018. While the rescheduling of marijuana in the U.S. could help improve Tilray's financial position, it's not guaranteed to do so.
