YouTube, the popular video platform owned by Google, has announced that U.S.-based creators can now receive payments in stablecoins, as reported on December 11. The platform has partnered with PayPal to offer payouts in the PYUSD stablecoin, a decision that aligns with YouTubes existing relationship with the financial services company, which handles its payout processing.

According to reports, PayPals Head of Crypto, May Zabaneh, along with a spokesperson from Google, confirmed the new feature. Zabaneh shared that PayPal introduced the PYUSD stablecoin payment option in the third quarter of this year. YouTube has now made this option available to American creators who earn a share of revenue from their videos on the platform.

"The beauty of what weve built is that YouTube doesnt have to directly handle crypto, making the process simpler for creators," Zabaneh explained.

The stablecoin payout system is currently active, but is limited to U.S. creators at this time.

What Are Stablecoins?

Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a steady value by being pegged 1:1 to a stable asset, such as the U.S. dollar. This makes them less volatile than other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Stablecoins are meant to function as digital dollars, providing the speed and efficiency of crypto while maintaining the stability of fiat currency.

About PayPal's PYUSD

PayPal launched its PYUSD stablecoin on August 7, 2023. It is pegged to the U.S. dollar and is built on the Ethereum blockchain, issued by Paxos. As of the latest data from DeFiLlama, PYUSD has a market cap of $3.9 billion and holds 1.26% of the total market share in stablecoins.

The Rise of Stablecoins in Global Finance

Stablecoins have gained significant attention and adoption in recent years, with entities like PayPal pushing their usage. In fact, the U.S. government, under the Trump administration, has also been exploring the use of USD-pegged stablecoins to further enhance the global influence of the U.S. dollar. The GENIUS Act, signed into law in July, aims to regulate stablecoins, solidifying their place in mainstream financial transactions.

This growing trend signals the increasing mainstream acceptance of stablecoins as a viable alternative for digital payments, even among major tech players like Google and PayPal.
