A Colorado woman, Kimberlee Singler, accused of murdering two of her children in a custody dispute, has been extradited from the UK to the U.S. She faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder. The children were found dead in Colorado Springs in 2023, with one surviving daughter. Singler denies involvement.
A Colorado resident, Kimberlee Singler, who is suspected of killing two of her children amid an intense custody dispute with her former husband, has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States to face multiple criminal charges. The incidents occurred two years ago in Colorado Springs, where Singlers 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son were found dead, while her 11-year-old daughter survived but suffered injuries.
The Incident
On December 19, 2023, authorities discovered the childrens bodies shortly after midnight. Court documents from the UK indicate that there were no footprints in the snow leading to the patio where Singler claimed an intruder had entered through an unlocked door. She reported that this individual attacked her, causing her to lose consciousness. Initially, her account was treated with caution, and police began to consider her as the main suspect. Singlers surviving daughter initially confirmed her mothers version, but later revised her statement, prompting investigators to focus on Singler as the person responsible. By December 26, 2023, Singler had fled to London and was apprehended after a four-day search in the Chelsea neighborhood.
Extradition and Legal Battle
Singler, 37, contested her extradition to the United States, denying any involvement in her childrens deaths. Her London-based attorney, Edward Fitzgerald, argued that a conviction for first-degree murder in Colorado would result in a mandatory life sentence without parole, which he claimed would breach European human rights law. Fitzgerald had previously represented Julian Assange in a well-known extradition case. In January 2025, a judge rejected Singlers extradition challenge, and her subsequent appeal was denied in November 2025, clearing the way for her transfer to the United States.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Singler faces several serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, three counts of child abuse, and one count of assault. Court documents reveal that she and her children had been staying with her mother during the ongoing custody dispute, but her mother was absent at the time of the killings. A court had previously instructed Singler to allow her ex-husband custody of the children during the holidays, with a hearing scheduled for December 20, 2023, to facilitate the transfer.
Events Leading Up to the Deaths
On the day of the scheduled court hearing, Singler filed a motion requesting a delay, stating that she and her children had been attacked. She indicated that two of her children were already deceased and that she required time to grieve and recover. During the investigation, Singler alleged that her ex-husband had previously dreamt about killing his family and was attempting to frame her. However, GPS data placed him approximately 80 miles away at the time of the murders, contradicting her claims.
Expert Opinions
Legal and psychological experts have described the case as highly complex, combining custody disputes with potential psychological factors. Jennifer Aldrich, a child psychology expert, emphasized that the situation demonstrates the severe consequences that can arise from contentious custody conflicts. She noted that while understanding the psychological state of the mother is important, the death of two children represents an irreparable loss that must remain the central concern of the investigation.
Next Steps
Singler is scheduled to appear in a U.S. court to respond to the charges linked to the deaths of her children. Investigators are expected to continue examining the case to clarify her motives and the circumstances surrounding the events. The legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the extradition and the charges she faces, as authorities gather additional evidence and testimonies related to this incident.
