Nation Wood, a former security staffer for President Joe Biden, has pleaded not guilty in California after his girlfriend was fatally shot. Authorities are investigating the incident, which Wood claims was an accidental discharge of his firearm inside his apartment.
Nation Wood, who previously worked as a security staff member for President Joe Biden, has been arrested in California in connection with the alleged death of his girlfriend, Samantha Emge. Wood, aged 25, appeared in court asserting his innocence following the fatal incident that claimed the life of 22-year-old Emge.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, the shooting took place while Wood was allegedly dry-firing his firearm inside his San Francisco apartment. He claimed that he was unaware the weapon was loaded, resulting in a bullet passing through a wall and striking Emge while she was in the shower. This explanation was cited during coverage by KTVU, with Doug Welch from the San Francisco Public Defenders Office describing the event as a tragic accident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the discharge of the weapon.
Background of Nation Wood
Wood served as a temporary member of the Secret Service protecting the Biden administration from November 2023 until July 2025. Following his departure from official protection duties, he continued working in security planning and event safety. Public records indicate that Wood appeared in photographs alongside high-ranking officials including Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, which were posted online in 2024.
Legal Proceedings and Bail Hearing
During a hearing at San Francisco Superior Court, Judge Christopher Hu set Wood's bail at $300,000. The judge noted Wood's upcoming service in the National Guard but also highlighted concerns that he might flee the country, labeling him a potential flight risk. Conditions for release include wearing an ankle monitor, surrendering any weapons, and remaining subject to random searches. Wood is currently held at the San Francisco County Jail and faces a maximum sentence of four years if convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
Ongoing Investigations
The case continues to be under investigation, with local authorities and the public awaiting additional information. Wood's defense maintains that the shooting was an accidental incident. Legal experts are monitoring developments closely as new facts are revealed.
