A retail store in Solihull has been shut down after authorities discovered illegal tobacco and other prohibited goods being sold. The investigation led to the seizure of thousands of unlawful products and ended with the shop permanently closing following legal action.

Store shut down for selling illegal tobacco

A retail shop in Solihull has been permanently closed following a legal case involving the distribution of illegal products. The store, identified as Boss Mart 4 located on Stratford Road in Shirley, was found selling prohibited tobacco items, vapes, counterfeit Labubu dolls, and unlicensed fireworks. The closure came after a coordinated investigation by local authorities, highlighting public safety concerns linked to such illegal sales.

Investigation and Seizure of Illegal Items

The enforcement action was led by Solihull Council's Trading Standards licensing team in collaboration with the Shirley neighbourhood team. During the operation, authorities confiscated significant quantities of unlawful products, including:

  • 4,350 packets of illegal cigarettes
  • 837 units of unlicensed hand-rolling tobacco
  • 68 disposable vapes
  • Counterfeit Labubu dolls
  • Fireworks sold without proper licensing

West Midlands Police confirmed the confiscation, and all seized goods were officially forfeited as part of the legal enforcement measures.

Legal Outcomes for the Store Owner

The owner of the shop, Dawood Kharoty, received a sentence in absentia and was fined £6,749. This fine reflects the severity of the offences, which included the sale of illegal tobacco and other restricted items. Although a formal closure order for the business was withdrawn, the landlord had already evicted the premises, resulting in the permanent cessation of trading activities at Boss Mart 4.

Community and Public Safety Implications

PC Prescott, a representative from the licensing team, emphasized that the enforcement measures were intended to protect local residents. She highlighted the health and safety risks associated with selling high-strength vapes and illegal tobacco products, particularly to minors. According to authorities, such items can contain harmful substances, contribute to addictive behavior, and potentially encourage anti-social activity in the community.

The operation serves as a reminder of the importance of compliance with legal regulations in retail outlets. Local authorities stressed that these enforcement actions are essential to safeguard public health and ensure community safety.

Ongoing Monitoring and Enforcement

The permanent closure of Boss Mart 4 demonstrates the continued commitment of Solihull Council and local police to monitor retail establishments and prevent the distribution of prohibited goods. Officials stated that vigilance and proactive enforcement remain necessary to protect vulnerable members of the community and maintain a secure local environment. The case also illustrates effective collaboration between council licensing teams and law enforcement agencies in tackling illegal commercial activities.
