Tragic Highway Crash: Woman, Child, and Trooper Killed as Truck Spills Debris on Road

A deadly traffic accident in Oklahoma resulted in the loss of three lives after debris from a truck carrying a heavy load reportedly fell onto a major highway on Wednesday, April 8. The incident occurred at approximately 11:27 a.m. along Interstate 35 in Oklahoma County. Authorities confirmed that the crash involved multiple vehicles and led to the deaths of a woman, a young child, and an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper.

According to official information, the victims included 36-year-old Mercedes Bayne from Oklahoma City and her four-year-old child, whose name has not been publicly released. The third victim was Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Vernon Brake, a veteran officer with nearly twenty years of service. Trooper Brake is survived by his wife and two children.

Investigators reported that the accident began after a truck transporting cargo allegedly released debris onto the roadway. The scattered materials created hazardous driving conditions for vehicles traveling along the interstate. Lieutenant Southall of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol stated that the presence of the debris caused a dangerous situation that disrupted traffic along the highway.

Authorities said that Mercedes Bayne’s vehicle struck the debris while traveling along the interstate. The impact caused the car to lose control and cross the center line of the highway. During the sequence of events, the vehicle broke through a safety cable barrier separating traffic lanes before colliding with the patrol vehicle driven by Trooper Vernon Brake.

The collision occurred on Interstate 35 between Britton Road and Hefner Road. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported, but the injuries sustained in the collision proved fatal for all three victims involved.

Law enforcement officials immediately secured the area and began an investigation. Due to the severity of the incident and the circumstances surrounding the debris on the roadway, the location of the crash was treated as a crime scene while investigators documented evidence and reconstructed the sequence of events.

Authorities initially requested assistance from the public in locating the truck believed to have lost the debris. Investigators later reported that the vehicle had been identified, and the request for public help was withdrawn. Officials have not released additional details regarding the truck while the investigation continues.

The Oklahoma County community has been deeply affected by the incident. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the loss and expressed support for the families, colleagues, and friends of those who died in the crash. Trooper Vernon Brake’s death has been particularly significant for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, where he served for nearly two decades.

Officials emphasized that the department has established official channels to support Trooper Brake’s family. Donations are being coordinated through the DPS Federal Credit Union, which will manage contributions intended to assist the family. Authorities warned that any fundraising campaigns outside the verified channels have not been confirmed by the department.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the collision. Evidence from the crash scene is being reviewed as officials work to determine the exact sequence of events and evaluate how the debris entered the roadway.

The tragedy highlights the serious dangers that roadway debris can create for drivers and emergency personnel. Incidents involving unsecured cargo can quickly lead to hazardous conditions, putting both civilians and law enforcement officers at risk. Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing as they seek to clarify all factors that contributed to the fatal crash.
