Suffolk County Council is launching a pioneering initiative to utilize the natural warmth of the River Gipping to heat buildings in Ipswich. The council, which has been developing the heat network since 2021, has successfully obtained 10 million from a government fund to bring the project to life.
According to Richard Rout of the council, the first phase could supply heat to approximately 40 buildings, ranging from offices to community facilities. "This represents a major step for Ipswich. The council has been committed to this project for several years, and the recent funding success enables us to move forward," he said. Rout added that the river energy could provide over 35 GWh of heat annually to public buildings.
Discussions with potential beneficiaries are already underway, and the council expects the first buildings to be connected by 2028. Rout emphasized that the scheme would deliver "substantial benefits" to the town.
The council highlighted that the project has the potential to improve local air quality, lower carbon emissions, and ensure reliable, cost-effective energy. Additionally, the initiative is collaborating with local colleges and the University of Suffolk to foster green skills development and create local employment opportunities.
Insights gained from this project could pave the way for expanding similar energy solutions across the county. The 10 million funding comes from the government's Green Heat Network Fund.
