‘A Lighter, More Friendly Path to Westeros’: Season 2 of ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Prequel Begins Filming This Month

The upcoming second season of the Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to start production next week. Following the premiere of Season 1 on January 18, 2026, the second season is expected to air in 2027.

The series takes place roughly a century before the events of the original show, bringing to life George R.R. Martins beloved world. It centers on Peter Claffey portraying Ser Duncan Dunk the Tall, a wandering Westerosi knight, alongside Dexter Sol Ansell as his loyal but small-statured squire, Egg.

Showrunner Ira Parker shared insights during HBO Maxs London presentation, emphasizing the series approachable tone. Working on this felt very natural, Parker said. Dunk is from the poorest corners of Kings Landing and suddenly faces lords, kings, and queens. Everything seems absurd to him, and that contrast naturally brings humor.

Parker described the show as a lighter, more friendly path to Westeros that allows viewers to enjoy the world before the darker elements of the realm unfold. In Westeros, anything can happengood or bad. Characters die without reason other than the whims of the Gods, and thats part of the storys thrill.

He also noted that the spin-off has a more modest budget compared to the original series, aligning with Dunks humble origins. Everything is shown through Dunks perspective this season, Parker explained. From music to cinematography, the style reflects his simple, unpolished character. Hes out of his depth, giving his best, and thats mirrored in the shows approach.

The show draws from George R.R. Martins Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Initially reported in development in 2021, the series was officially greenlit in 2023. The announcement of the second season came during a press event in London led by HBO and HBO Max Content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys.
