Clint Bentleys film Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainger, a logger and railroad worker residing in the Pacific Northwest during the late 1960s. Bentley, known for co-writing Sing Sing, enlisted Adolpho Veloso as the cinematographer for the project.

The visuals in Train Dreams are striking. Towering green trees stand against a clear blue sky, until a wildfire sweeps through, transforming the scenery into shades of ash and gray. Velosos cinematography leaves a lasting impression, particularly in scenes where the forest is cut down to make way for progress.

Veloso shared in an interview that "for 99% of the film, we relied on natural light." Filming on real locations, Bentley aimed to create a feeling of memories being pieced together, reflecting the perspective of Edgertons character, Robert.

For historical accuracy, Veloso researched photographs from the 1920s onward. He noticed the images resembled the 3:2 aspect ratio and decided to adopt it, enhancing the intimate and nostalgic feel of the film. To capture both the natural beauty and the subtleties of light, Veloso chose the Alexa 35 camera for its wide dynamic range and compact design.

Night scenes were illuminated using natural sources such as fire and candles, maintaining authenticity and grounding the visuals. The films lush daylight sequences were shot with Kowa Spherical lenses, while Zeiss Super Speeds were used for nighttime shots.

After the wildfire, the landscape and Graingers home lose much of their color, leaving behind muted, earthy tones, all captured naturally without artificial enhancement. Velosos work highlights the beauty and impermanence of the natural world through a deeply immersive visual style.

Analysis: The Visual Craft of Train Dreams

Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams stands out for its meticulous visual storytelling. Joel Edgerton’s portrayal of Robert Grainger is complemented by Adolpho Veloso’s cinematography, which relies almost entirely on natural light to create a sense of realism and memory-driven perspective.

Veloso’s choice to adopt the 3:2 aspect ratio, inspired by historical photographs, enhances the film’s nostalgic quality. The Alexa 35 camera allowed for a wide dynamic range, capturing both daylight and night scenes authentically. The use of natural lighting—fire, candles, and sunlight—grounds the narrative in the Pacific Northwest setting of the late 1960s.

The film’s progression from vibrant forests to ash-gray landscapes after the wildfire emphasizes impermanence and environmental change. By avoiding artificial enhancement, Veloso preserves the textures and subtleties of the natural world, making the visuals a central storytelling element alongside Edgerton’s performance.

Ultimately, Train Dreams demonstrates how technical choices in cinematography—camera, lenses, aspect ratio, and lighting—can serve narrative and emotional impact, delivering a deeply immersive experience for the viewer.
