Warning: Major spoilers for The Abandons ahead.
The series centers around an intense rivalry between two powerful women: Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey), who owns farmland in Jasper Hollow on the outskirts of Angels Ridge, and Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson), a wealthy and influential figure in the town. Their tense relationship escalates after a tragic event in the first episode: Constances son Willem (Toby Hemingway) assaults Fionas daughter Dahlia (Diana Silvers) and is subsequently killed by the Nolan family. They bury his body in secret, but as the season progresses, the truth inevitably comes to light, igniting the long-simmering feud.
Before the full fallout, there is a brief glimmer of potential reconciliation. Constance proposes buying part of Fionas land, an offer that could benefit both sides. Fiona consults her family and Miles Alderton (Ryan Hurst) with his daughter, who also live on the property. While most agree to sell, Fiona ultimately refuses, setting the stage for the explosive finale, titled "This Was Meant to be My Peace."
The Strain on Trisha and Elias
Constances manipulations backfire when her daughter Trisha (Aisling Franciosi) learns that her friend Jenny, who uncovered Constances ties to the criminal group Red Masks, has been killed. In retaliation for defying her mother, Trisha is drugged and returned home. There, she discovers that her brother Willems death was orchestrated by the Nolans, including her boyfriend Elias (Nick Robinson). Shocked and devastated, Trisha confronts Elias. Despite his insistence that Willem was a monster for his actions against Dahlia, the revelation fractures their relationship. While there is lingering affection, Trisha walks away, leaving the future of their romance uncertain.
The Rivalry Erupts into Violence
Once Constance uncovers the truth about her sons death, she kidnaps Dahlia with the Red Masks, igniting open warfare between the Van Ness and Nolan families. In a brutal confrontation, Constance slashes Dahlias cheek, but the young woman remains defiant, recognizing her adversarys fear.
That night, Fiona visits the Van Ness estate alone, surrendering her weapons and attempting to negotiate her daughters release. Their confrontation escalates, with Constance physically harming Dahlia to assert dominance. Fionas initial solo mission is revealed to be a distraction: Miles Alderton and Fionas children secretly infiltrate the estate to dismantle Constances power. Amid the chaos, Dahlia fights back, and Elias drives a wagon filled with burning barrels into the home, reducing the estate to flames.
The Aftermath
Constances empire collapses. Many of her followers are dead, some of her children turn against her, and her grand estate is destroyed. Fiona confronts Constance in the burning house, and the two women engage in a violent struggle. The fight leaves them unconscious as the fire spreads. The season ends on a suspenseful note, showing a silhouetted figure in the flames before cutting to black, leaving audiences unsure who survives.
While Fiona seems the likely survivor, Constances resilience makes it equally plausible that she endured as well. It is even possible that both matriarchs live, hinting at continued conflict and intrigue in the next season.
