Movie enthusiasts today enjoy unprecedented access to films, not just for viewing but for exploring alternate versions and deeper insights into their favorite directors' visions. From laserdiscs to DVDs and now Blu-Rays and 4K editions, these home formats have allowed filmmakers to present expanded or reimagined versions of their work.
No one has embraced this more than James Cameron. Since the early 1990s, he has utilized home media to release extended editions of classics like Aliens, The Abyss, and Terminator 2. Many argue that The Abyss only became the celebrated sci-fi film it is today thanks to its Special Edition cut, which let Cameron realize his full vision.
So far, Cameron has not faced runtime restrictions with his Avatar sequels. Avatar: Fire and Ash currently runs 197 minutes, yet there is still unused footage from the production. In a recent discussion, Cameron revealed that extended editions of The Way of Water and Fire and Ash are possible and hinted at a novel approach to presenting them.
Every Avatar film is rich in design, imagination, and character work, often resulting in surplus footage. Fans have already seen two extended editions of the original Avatar, previously exclusive to special edition Blu-Rays and later remastered in 4K HDR for collector editions. While The Way of Water has only seen its theatrical release, Cameron indicated that extended cuts are being considered:
"We're just starting that conversation now... The scenes themselves are usually pretty good. So we're talking about how we might be able to make that accessible to people."
This suggests that no major storylines are missing from the theatrical versions, but the extra footage could still offer fascinating insights into the films' worlds.
Cameron is also eager to enhance the Avatar experience beyond conventional home media. Rather than simply adding deleted scenes as bonus content, he envisions fully integrated extended cuts. He elaborated on an unconventional future format:
"I'd love to do it in 3D, over, let's say, the new generation of Meta headsets... We've got to continuously evolve the experience and the platform and the way people can access that stuff."
While the idea of using advanced technology like Meta headsets is exciting, Cameron also confirmed that traditional releases remain an option: "We could do a long cut of the movie and rerelease it in a few years; there are so many different ways to do it."
The potential for new extended content, combined with innovative viewing platforms, makes the future of Avatar releases especially intriguing. Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters on December 19, 2025.
