Krystal Nielson, known from The Bachelor, has revealed the terrifying complications she faced while giving birth to her son, Rowan. On December 3, Nielson detailed the life-threatening experience on Instagram, describing how both she and her baby were at serious risk.
"On November 14, we went in for a planned induction due to an umbilical vein varix the same issue that led to an early induction with our daughter Andara," Nielson wrote. "By Sunday morning, after 33 hours of induction, my cervix had barely moved from 1 cm to 3 cm despite multiple interventions. Exhausted, I finally agreed to an epidural so labor could progress."
After 2.5 hours, she began pushing. "Labor started well, but after an hour, I realized something was wrong. Rowan had stopped descending. Nearly 3.5 hours later, I looked at my midwife and said, 'He isn't coming,'" Nielson explained.
The situation escalated quickly. Bright red blood appeared, and it was discovered that Rowan was trapped under her pelvic bone and her uterus had ruptured. A full medical team rushed her to the operating room for an emergency C-section while she remained awake.
Rowan had ingested a significant amount of blood and was immediately taken to the NICU. Initial concerns about potential brain damage were later alleviated when tests confirmed he was healthy. Nielson described the agony of not being able to see or hold him in those critical hours.
Doctors told her that if she hadnt been at the hospital when the rupture occurred, the outcome could have been fatal for both. Following delivery, Nielson underwent surgery to repair her severely damaged uterus, which doctors successfully restored.
Due to the high risk of another rupture, she and her husband, Miles Bowles, were advised against having more children, a heartbreaking revelation as they had hoped for a third child. Rowan underwent three days of therapeutic hypothermia to protect his brain, and Nielson was able to hold him for the first time on day four.
"By day six, we left the NICU together mama, daddy, and our miracle baby healthy and ready to go home to big sister Andara," she shared. The family now commemorates Rowans birthday by immersing themselves in ice-cold water, honoring his survival and resilience.
Nielson expressed gratitude for the support of friends, family, and fans, stating, "We felt every prayer. We are forever changed, forever grateful."
Krystal Nielson gained recognition on Arie Luyendyk Jr.s season of The Bachelor in 2018 and later won season 5 of Bachelor in Paradise, becoming engaged to Chris Randone. After their 2019 marriage ended in 2020, Nielson began her relationship with Bowles, with whom she has two children and married in August 2023.
