  3. Birmingham Airport CEO rejects idea of renaming it after Ozzy Osbourne

Fans of the legendary rock star Ozzy Osbourne should not expect to see his name on the arrivals board at Birmingham Airport. Despite a campaign advocating to rename the airport after the iconic musician, the facilitys CEO, Nick Barton, confirmed to BBC Radio WM that no change will take place.

"Birmingham boasts an incredible roster of influential figures, from historic icons like Charles Darwin to rock stars like Robert Plant and comedians such as Sir Lenny Henry, but renaming the airport is not on the table," Barton stated. "The airport's current name plays a key role in our growth strategy and future plans."

At present, the airport operates under the name Birmingham Airport and uses the code BHX. Although a renaming is off the table, the airport will honor Osbourne and other notable Birmingham natives with a dedicated mural.

In addition, Ozzy Osbourne was recently posthumously awarded the Lord Mayor's Award in Birmingham, coinciding with what would have been his 77th birthday.

Commentary: Birmingham Airport Will Keep Its Name Despite Ozzy Osbourne Campaign

From my perspective, the decision by Birmingham Airport to retain its current name reflects a strategic choice rather than a slight against the late Ozzy Osbourne. CEO Nick Barton emphasized that the airport's branding is integral to its growth plans, signaling that commercial and logistical considerations outweigh public campaigns, no matter how popular.

It is notable, however, that the airport intends to recognize Osbourne and other local figures through a dedicated mural. This approach balances respect for cultural icons with the operational priorities of the airport, ensuring that the city's heritage is acknowledged without disrupting its established identity.

Ultimately, while fans may feel disappointed, the move preserves the airport's continuity and allows for alternative tributes. The posthumous awarding of the Lord Mayor's Award to Osbourne further demonstrates that the city values his legacy, even without renaming its primary transport hub.
