Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has unveiled a new life-size statue of himself in London's Leicester Square, describing the experience as similar to having a "life-size doll." He playfully commented on his appearance to co-star Kajol, who is also featured in the statue, saying, "I think Im looking very handsome. Youre looking very pretty too." Kajol responded with laughter, calling it "like a second thought, but thanks."
The statue celebrates 30 years since the release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the longest-running film in Indian cinema, starring both Khan and Kajol. Fans braved heavy rain to witness the unveiling, capturing photos and cheering as the actors appeared.
The romantic film, often regarded as Bollywoods version of Romeo and Juliet, follows the love story of Raj and Simran across Europe and India, with several scenes shot in London, including King's Cross station. The new statue now joins other famous figures like Harry Potter, Paddington, and Bridget Jones as part of Leicester Squares "Scenes in the Square" trail.
Khan said it felt "very fitting" to have the statue in London due to the strong appeal of Bollywood films in the UK, adding that he was eager to show it to his three children. Kajol described the honor as "amazing" and "a little unbelievable."
Bollywood continues to produce hundreds of films annually and enjoys a massive international following, though the industry has faced challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic, with streaming platforms changing audience habits. Kajol noted the competition for viewers has increased, while Khan emphasized that communal movie-watching will always remain important.
Shah Rukh Khan has had a prolific career spanning over three decades, transitioning from actor to film producer and cricket team owner. Recently, he joined the billionaire club and returned to films after a four-year hiatus, hinting at his upcoming action project, King. When asked about potential roles similar to James Bond, Khan joked, "No. I dont have the accent. And I dont like shaken martinis."
Despite dabbling in action, Khan is primarily celebrated as Bollywoods king of romance. Reflecting on advice for newlyweds, Kajol humorously noted that his films usually focus on pre-marriage romance, leaving post-marriage matters to real life.
The "Scenes in the Square" initiative is organized by the Heart of London Business Alliance with support from Westminster City Council. Last month, a statue of Bridget Jones was added to the collection. Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, expressed pride at seeing the film honored in the UK, highlighting its cultural impact alongside Hollywood legends. Ros Morgan, chief executive of Heart of London Business Alliance, welcomed Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to the trail, praising Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as a cinematic phenomenon that continues to enchant global audiences.
Analysis: Shah Rukh Khan's Statue Unveiling in London and the Legacy of Bollywood Cinema
Shah Rukh Khan's unveiling of his life-size statue in Leicester Square marks a monumental moment not only for the actor but for Bollywood cinema as a whole. This gesture celebrates three decades of his iconic role in *Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge* (DDLJ), a film that has left an indelible mark on global cinema, especially within the Indian diaspora. As Khan himself noted, the significance of this unveiling in London is a testament to Bollywood's strong cultural presence in the UK and beyond.
DDLJ, which features Khan alongside Kajol, is widely regarded as one of the most influential Bollywood films of all time. Its blend of romance, cultural exchange, and timeless appeal has contributed to its status as the longest-running film in Indian cinema. The movie’s influence extends well beyond India, resonating with audiences globally, a fact underscored by the fact that Leicester Square now houses statues of iconic figures such as Harry Potter and Paddington Bear. By joining this distinguished group, Shah Rukh Khan’s statue becomes more than just a tribute; it’s a symbol of Bollywood’s place in world cinema.
Despite the challenges faced by the industry due to the rise of streaming platforms and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bollywood continues to thrive, producing hundreds of films annually. Khan’s emphasis on the importance of communal movie-watching further highlights Bollywood’s resilience in a shifting entertainment landscape. His comments on the increased competition for viewers acknowledge the changing dynamics of audience behavior, yet his legacy and influence as an actor remain intact.
For both Khan and Kajol, the unveiling marks a personal achievement and a milestone in their careers. Kajol’s reflection on the honor of the statue captures the sense of disbelief that often accompanies such recognitions, while Khan’s playful remarks at the event remind us of his charismatic presence that transcends the silver screen. With the actor now firmly established as a global figure and a cultural ambassador for Bollywood, his statue stands not only as a tribute to a career but as a symbol of Bollywood’s lasting impact on the world stage.
