‘Boston Blue’ and ‘Sheriff Country’ Renewed for Season 2 on CBS

CBS has confirmed that its Friday night crime dramas Boston Blue and Sheriff Country will return for a second season. The announcement came on Wednesday from the network.

The two series, a spinoff of Fire Country starring Morena Baccarin and a Blue Bloods spinoff featuring Donnie Wahlberg, have quickly become strong performers in their Friday night time slots since debuting on October 17.

The upcoming second seasons are slated to air during the 2026-27 television season.

Audiences have immediately connected with Boston Blue and Sheriff Country, both on broadcast and streaming platforms, said CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach. Renewing these series early highlights the appeal of character-focused storytelling, gripping plots, and the outstanding talent both in front of and behind the camera.

According to Nielsen Live + 7 data, Sheriff Country averages 7.6 million viewers, showing a 33% increase over the time slots previous occupant, S.W.A.T. Boston Blue draws around 8 million viewers and has seen streaming numbers jump 87% compared to Blue Bloods from last fall.

These two series are the first new CBS shows this season to earn renewals, joining the previously announced drama Einstein, starring Matthew Gray Gubler, which will premiere in 2026-27. Renewal announcements for other series are expected to continue throughout the season ahead of the May upfronts.

Sheriff Country features Morena Baccarin, Matt Lauria, Michele Weaver, W. Earl Brown, and Christopher Gorham. Its executive producers include Max Thieriot, Tony Phelan, Joan Rater, Matt Lopez, with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed representing Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Boston Blue stars Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, Gloria Reuben, Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, and Mika Amonsen. Executive producers include Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Donnie Wahlberg, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed for Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Analysis: CBS's Early Renewals Reflect Growing Success of New Friday Night Dramas

The announcement of the second season renewals for CBS's Friday night crime dramas, Boston Blue and Sheriff Country, comes as no surprise given their strong early performance. Both series, which debuted on October 17, have captured significant audiences, proving that CBS's strategy of character-driven, gripping storylines is resonating with viewers.

Sheriff Country has proven particularly impressive, averaging 7.6 million viewers, marking a 33% increase over the previous occupant of its time slot, S.W.A.T.. Similarly, Boston Blue has maintained an impressive 8 million viewers, with its streaming numbers soaring by 87% compared to Blue Bloods from the previous fall. These statistics are not just encouraging—they are a clear indication of the growing demand for new crime dramas with strong, relatable characters.

CBS’s decision to renew both series for a second season before the end of their first shows the network's confidence in their ongoing potential. The focus on character development and high-stakes plots has helped these shows quickly find a dedicated audience. Both programs also demonstrate the increasing importance of streaming platforms in a show's success, as both have gained substantial traction outside of traditional broadcast television.

With the upcoming second seasons set to air during the 2026-27 television season, CBS is positioning itself for another win in the crime drama genre. The announcement of these renewals marks a strong start for CBS's new programming this season, alongside the anticipated drama Einstein, starring Matthew Gray Gubler, which is also set to premiere in 2026-27.

As CBS continues to prioritize compelling, character-focused storytelling, other series renewals are likely to follow suit, with more announcements expected as we approach the May upfronts. The success of Boston Blue and Sheriff Country reinforces the importance of engaging narratives that keep audiences coming back week after week.
