Bowen Yang, known for Wicked: For Good, and Matt Rogers, recognized from No Good Deed, are teaming up to co-write and co-star in an upcoming comedy for Searchlight Pictures. The project draws inspiration from a multi-part episode of the Search Engine podcast titled Why didnt Chris and Dan get into Berghain?, which follows two Americans traveling across the ocean in an attempt to enter the worlds most exclusive nightclub.
This collaboration marks a reunion for Yang and Rogers with Searchlight, following their lead roles in the 2022 queer rom-com Fire Island, directed by Andrew Ahn and released directly on Hulu. Production will be handled by Olivia Gerke and Oly Obst for 3 Arts Entertainment, with PJ Vogt and Sruthi Pinnamaneni serving as co-producers. The project is overseen by VP of Production Richard Ruiz and Creative Executive Daniel Yu, reporting to Searchlight Pictures Co-Heads of Film Production & Development, DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.
Yang and Rogers are well-known for their podcast Las Culturistas, which has been awarded Podcast of the Year at the iHeart Radio Podcast Awards in both 2023 and 2025. Time magazine also recognized it as one of the 100 Best Podcasts of All Time. The duo recently hosted the televised edition of the Las Culturistas Culture Awards on Bravo, with the show set to return next year on Peacock.
Yang, a five-time Emmy nominee, continues to appear on Saturday Night Live and reprises his role as Pfannee in Wicked: For Good. He is also set to voice a character opposite Bill Hader in Warner Bros. upcoming animated adaptation of The Cat in the Hat. Rogers has recently appeared alongside Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano in Netflixs dark comedy series No Good Deed and in Aziz Ansaris Good Fortune. He also stars in the new season of the Kristen Wiig series Palm Royale, which premiered on Apple TV in November.
Representation for Yang and Rogers is provided by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Schreck Rose Dapello, while Vogt and Pinnamaneni are represented by UTA and Jackoway Austen. The deal for this new project was negotiated by UTA.
Analysis: Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers Team Up for New Comedy Project
The announcement of Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers joining forces for an upcoming comedy at Searchlight Pictures has generated considerable excitement in the entertainment industry. Known for their creative partnership on the hit podcast "Las Culturistas," Yang and Rogers are now expanding their talents into the film world, with a project inspired by the Search Engine podcast episode “Why didn’t Chris and Dan get into Berghain?”. This marks a significant milestone in their careers, building on their successful collaborations in the queer rom-com "Fire Island."
The concept of the new comedy, which focuses on two Americans attempting to enter the notoriously exclusive Berghain nightclub in Berlin, blends humor with a unique cultural critique. It’s an intriguing premise that taps into the ongoing fascination with the world’s most infamous club, known for its strict entry rules and unwelcoming door policy. The pairing of Yang and Rogers, both of whom have proven their comedic chops, promises an engaging exploration of outsider dynamics and the lengths some are willing to go for status and belonging.
Yang and Rogers’ track record in both podcasting and acting makes them ideal for this project. Their success with "Las Culturistas," recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 Best Podcasts of All Time, is a testament to their ability to engage with pop culture while offering insightful commentary. Additionally, Yang’s continued work on "Saturday Night Live" and Rogers' recent ventures in Netflix and Apple TV series highlight their versatile talent. The synergy between their comedic sensibilities and Searchlight’s production values creates the potential for a project that resonates with both critical acclaim and commercial appeal.
It’s also noteworthy that the duo’s return to Searchlight, following "Fire Island," suggests a productive working relationship with the studio, which has been known for championing unique voices and diverse storytelling. This collaboration, with production handled by Olivia Gerke and Oly Obst of 3 Arts Entertainment, signals a continuation of a trend where the entertainment industry recognizes the value in empowering creators like Yang and Rogers to bring their fresh perspectives to the screen.
As the project moves into production, fans can expect an exploration of cultural boundaries, humor, and personal ambition. With Yang and Rogers' unique comedic style, this upcoming film has all the elements needed to make it a standout success in the world of comedy cinema.
