At the 2025 IndieWire Honors in Los Angeles, German actress Nina Hoss captivated audiences once again, demonstrating why she remains one of the most daring and innovative performers today. Following her acclaimed role as Cate Blanchetts tormented wife in Tr, Hoss has returned with a commanding performance in Nia DaCostas adaptation of Hedda, earning her the Spotlight Award this year.
Reflecting on the honor, Hoss remarked, I strangely feel pushed forwards and sheltered by you. It feels really beautiful, and you make me feel seen in what I do and what I try to do with my work.
In the film, Hoss takes on Eileen Lvborg, a gender-swapped version of Henrik Ibsens Eilert from Hedda Gabler. Rather than simply inhabiting a traditional role, she redefines it, exploring fresh emotional and thematic dimensions around ambition, desire, and the inner lives of women who refuse to be diminished. Her commanding presence sets a new standard, potentially shaping future interpretations of the story.
Hoss expressed gratitude to her co-star, saying, Thank you to Tessa Thompson for being such an amazing, daring, dangerous dance partner. Thank you for your willingness to explore deeply and have fun and run together with it.
Discussing the risks inherent in her work, Hoss shared that Eileens struggle resonated deeply with her. The characters fight to be heard, respected, and loved unconditionally reminded Hoss of the influential women in her own life, particularly her mother. She introduced the German term durchhalten, translating roughly as stout-hearted, to describe the resilience and determination she sees in Eileen. Eileen is just that to me, shes tougher. She hangs in there. I think that feels like a good word to have in your repertoire these days, Hoss said.
This spirit of perseverance was reflected in the collaborative process on set. Hoss praised director Nia DaCosta for her sensitivity and boldness, highlighting the partnership as essential in bringing Eileens character to life in a way that feels destined for cinematic recognition. Eileen shows us the struggle to be seen, to be heard, to be taken seriously, to be loved for who you are, and to be given the freedom to explore just that, she said.
Hoss recognition goes beyond a personal achievement; it signifies a milestone that expands opportunities for all actresses who follow. Her work in Hedda sets a new benchmark for depth, courage, and artistic innovation.
The IndieWire Honors event was held on Thursday, December 4, featuring an intimate cocktail reception and awards ceremony. Hoss performance and reflections underscored the evening as a celebration of groundbreaking talent in contemporary cinema.
