Brian McKnight Jr. Alleges His Father Denied Saying "I Love You" to Estranged Son Niko Before Passing Away from Cancer

Brian McKnight Jr. has spoken out, claiming that his father, singer Brian McKnight, did not express love to his estranged son, Niko McKnight, during Nikos final days battling cancer. The revelation came during an interview with Marc Lamont Hill, where McKnight Jr. recounted a distressing phone call from Niko shortly before his death in May.

One of the most painful memories of my life is the day my brother called me crying, facing death, and admitting I was right about advising him not to reach out to our father, McKnight Jr. said. He added, All Niko wanted was for our dad to tell him he loved him. Instead, my father replied, I cant arbitrarily say that I love you.

In recent years, Brian McKnight Sr. has taken legal steps regarding his family, including changing his name in October 2023 to Brian Kainoa Makoa McKnight Sr. to establish seniority over his newborn son with his wife Leilani Malia Mendoza. Months later, he referred to his older biological children as products of sin on social media.

Currently, McKnight Sr.s Instagram bio does not mention Brian McKnight Jr. or his late son Niko, who passed away at 32 after a two-year battle with cancer. Niko publicly shared his diagnosis in January 2024, and his passing was confirmed by his uncle Claude in May.

McKnight Jr. has criticized his fathers actions publicly, including the timing of social media posts celebrating a legal victory coinciding with Nikos birthday. Ive tried to be the bigger person, to stay mature, but my dad remains emotionally unavailable and unable to handle loss, McKnight Jr. shared on Instagram.

Earlier, McKnight Jr. had attempted to secure top medical care for Niko but stopped after Nikos mother, Julie, requested they step back. We quickly realized they didnt have insurance or access to proper doctors, so we acted, following her wishes, he said.

The interview highlights the emotional strain and unresolved tensions within the McKnight family, particularly during Nikos final days, leaving a lasting impact on his surviving brother.
