Bringing pensioners together at Christmas: The club

A community group in Jersey has come together to bring joy and connection to elderly residents during the Christmas season. The Friendship Club, a part of Communicare in St. Brelade, gathers every week, offering a warm and inclusive environment for seniors who may otherwise face social isolation. This week's meeting was a festive affair, featuring a traditional Christmas turkey pie with all the trimmings, a raffle with holiday prizes, and a performance by a local choir.

Dot Slous, aged 86, shared her delight with the event, saying the Christmas lunch was "lovely as always." She was particularly excited to win four raffle prizes, including a Christmas cookie jar and "a lovely handbag just what I needed to carry my presents home." Dot expressed her gratitude towards the volunteers, stating, "They're wonderfulwe get spoiled here." The club is known for the supportive atmosphere it creates for attendees, which is bolstered by the dedicated volunteers who help organize these weekly events.

Grace, the lead volunteer who has been part of the group for over 25 years, emphasized the importance of staying socially connected, especially for the elderly. She noted, "Weve got a wonderful group of members. They all get along so well, which is incredible, especially considering the diversity of their backgrounds. Its amazing how theyve managed to come together in such a fantastic way." This sense of community and friendship is central to the mission of the club, where members from different walks of life bond over shared experiences.

One such member, George Nixon, aged 93, shared how the group has been a source of solace for him since the loss of his wife earlier this year. "My wife and I used to come together, but as her health deteriorated due to cancer and dementia, she no longer wanted to join," George explained. "She passed away in February, so I decided to return. My son encouraged me to go somewhere social since I was on my own." For George, the club has provided not only companionship but also a sense of continuity and comfort during a difficult time.

For Lorraine Murphy, a first-time visitor, the initial experience was nerve-wracking. "I was nervous on my first visit. I stood in the corner for a while before finally coming in, but I'm so glad I did. Everyone is absolutely wonderful, the meals are great, and there's so much conversation," Lorraine shared. Her story highlights the welcoming atmosphere of the group, where new members are always encouraged and supported, helping them feel at home despite initial hesitation.

Meanwhile, 102-year-old Morris Murray, who was attending the gathering with his wife Joy, aged 93, reflected fondly on his childhood Christmas memories. "I'm a lucky young man," he said with a smile, reminiscing about the tradition of hanging stockings for Father Christmas. "We used to get a bit of coal for luck and some nuts," he recalled, adding, "I wasn't bothered by the coal." His joyful recounting of past Christmases underscores the timelessness of the season and the shared nostalgia that brings people together across generations.

The Friendship Club's weekly gatherings provide more than just meals and entertainment; they offer a vital support network for the elderly, helping them combat loneliness and stay engaged with others in their community. The clubs volunteers, like Grace, play an instrumental role in fostering these connections, ensuring that seniors can experience the joy of togetherness during what is often a challenging time in their lives.
