Canine Crowd Flocks to Pet-Friendly Theater for 'Zootopia 2' Screening and Gives It a Paws-Up

Zootopia 2 debuted on November 26 and quickly became a box office sensation. Audiences returned to catch up with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, continuing the story from the 2016 original. The sequel set a new record for the largest global opening of any Disney animated film, and its launch in China marked one of the highest openings ever in the country, with the biggest animated non-local debut in history.

Part of the excitement came from China offering special pet-friendly screenings. Dogs and their owners were welcomed into select theaters, creating a unique cinematic experience for furry fans. Videos circulating on social media show a wide range of dog breeds, from tiny Poodles to massive Saint Bernards, attending the premiere alongside their human companions. Flashlights and playful energy made the screenings feel like a lively concert, with dogs visibly engaged in the movie, tapping paws to the soundtrack and enjoying snuggles with their owners.

China's Cinemas Roll Out the Red Carpet for Pups

Theaters in cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Nanjing, Xian, Chongqing, Qingdao, Suzhou, and Lanzhou hosted pet-only sessions for the opening weekend. Special measures ensured a comfortable experience: every seat was equipped with diapers, pads, and cleaning supplies, and pet owners were expected to clean up afterward. These sessions were designed exclusively for pets, keeping regular viewers who might have allergies or noise concerns separate.

Certain cities added unique features for their four-legged guests. Beijing introduced calm dog zones for timid pups, Shenzhen set up LED-lit photo areas with small gifts for owners, Chengdu held breed-specific screenings, and Lanzhous Wanda Cinema collaborated with local adoption groups for multi-day events. Fans and their dogs reportedly gave the movie glowing reviews, leading dog lovers to hope these pet-friendly screenings become a regular offering in cinemas.
