Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, celebrated for his roles in Mortal Kombat and The Man in the High Castle, has passed away at the age of 75. His publicist, Penny Vizcarra, confirmed that he died on Thursday, Dec. 4, in Santa Barbara, California, due to complications from a stroke.
Tagawa gained international recognition portraying the villainous sorcerer Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat franchise, appearing in the original 1995 film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, as well as in television adaptations and video games.
Born in Tokyo on September 27, 1950, Tagawa moved to the United States as a child when his fathers service in the American Army relocated the family to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He later lived in Louisiana and Texas before settling in California, where he began acting at Duarte High School. Reflecting on his youth, he once noted the challenges of growing up Japanese in the American South during the 1950s.
Tagawa started training in martial arts in Japan and continued during his studies at the University of Southern California. He then returned to Japan to study under Master Nakayama of the Japan Karate Association. Upon returning to Los Angeles, he taught his own martial arts style, Chu Shin, and soon entered the acting world.
Director Bernardo Bertolucci discovered him while he was teaching Chu Shin, casting him as Chang in the 1987 Oscar-winning film The Last Emperor, which marked his breakout role at the age of 37. Tagawa described the experience as surreal, recalling the excitement of working with one of the worlds top directors on a production filmed in China.
In 1991, he portrayed Heihachi Mishima in Tekken, inspiring the ongoing video game franchise. His role in Mortal Kombat became one of his most iconic, leading to appearances in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997), the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2013) and Mortal Kombat X: Generations (2015), as well as voice and likeness contributions to Mortal Kombat 11 (2019) and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught (2023).
Over his extensive career, Tagawa appeared in more than 150 film, television, and video game projects. He collaborated with directors including Ivan Reitman on Twins (1988), Philip Kaufman on Rising Sun (1993), Tim Burton on Planet of the Apes (2001), Michael Bay on Pearl Harbor (2001), and Rob Marshall on Memoirs of a Geisha (2005). His television work included appearances on MacGyver, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Miami Vice. His last major role was as Nobusuke Tagomi in the 2015 Amazon Prime series The Man in the High Castle.
Tagawa spent his final years living on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. He is survived by his wife, Sally, their three childrenCalen, Byrnne, and Canaand two grandchildren, River and Thea Clayton.
