Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, star of 'Mortal Kombat,' passes away at age 75

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the Tokyo-born actor recognized for his performances in the film Mortal Kombat and the TV series The Man in the High Castle, has died at the age of 75.

Tagawa passed away in Santa Barbara due to complications from a stroke, confirmed by his manager, Margie Weiner. "He died surrounded by his family, with love," she said.

Tagawa's career in film and television began to gain major recognition in 1987 with his role in Bernardo Bertoluccis Oscar-winning film The Last Emperor. He later appeared in notable movies including Pearl Harbor, Planet of the Apes, and License to Kill.

Although born in Tokyo, Tagawa was mostly raised in the U.S. South, as his father, originally from Hawaii, was stationed at Army bases on the mainland. He also spent time living in Honolulu and on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

In 2005, Tagawa portrayed the Baron in Memoirs of a Geisha, a film adaptation of the popular novel about a young girls journey from a Japanese fishing village to high society. While some critics questioned the film's cultural authenticity, Tagawa explained that it was unrealistic to expect a completely accurate representation of Japanese culture in a story written and directed by Americans. "What did they expect? It wasnt a documentary," he said in 2006. "Unless the Japanese did the movie, its all interpretation."

Tagawa trained in martial arts but chose not to pursue competitive fighting. Instead, he created his own program, Ninjah Sportz, which combined martial arts techniques with training and wellness practices. He worked with professional athletes, including World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Brian Viloria, and provided guidance to the University of Hawaii football team.

In 2008, Tagawa pleaded guilty to a minor harassment charge in Honolulu involving a former girlfriend. He accepted full responsibility for the incident and made no excuses.
