A growing debate has emerged in Chicago over small delivery robots navigating the citys sidewalks. Two companies, Coco and Serve, are currently operating these compact machines, which transport meals to local residents.

Since its launch in November, an online petition opposing the robots has garnered over 1,200 signatures. The petition argues that sidewalks should prioritize pedestrians rather than wheel-based devices.

Josh Robertson, the petitions organizer, initially found the robots intriguing, seeing them as a glimpse of futuristic technology. However, after encountering one in person, he realized how they could interfere with pedestrian movement, prompting him to call for greater transparency and safety measures regarding their use.

Concerns have been raised about accessibility and safety. Some individuals using wheelchairs or crutches report that the robots create obstacles, and one man, Anthony Jonas, required medical attention after colliding with a robot. Jonas recounted, I stumbled over it, and I hit my eyelid on the flag attached to the robot. Blood, urgent care, stitchesthe whole thing.

Online discussions reflect a mix of frustration and curiosity. Comments range from jokingly asking about legal consequences for knocking over robots to expressing outright dislike for their presence.

Privacy advocates have also voiced concerns, given that the robots use multiple cameras for navigation, raising questions about public surveillance and data collection.

Coco has expressed willingness to meet with Robertson and other concerned residents to address their issues, although changing opinions may prove challenging.

While small delivery robots have been deployed in several cities for years, some municipalities, including San Francisco, have introduced restrictions, limiting numbers and confining them to low-traffic areas. It remains uncertain whether Chicago officials will adopt similar measures in response to the petition.

Author's Analysis: Sidewalk Robots in Chicago

The introduction of small delivery robots by Coco and Serve has sparked a clear divide in Chicago. While the technology represents a step toward automated delivery, the immediate impact on pedestrian safety and accessibility cannot be ignored.

The petition, which has collected over 1,200 signatures, highlights genuine concerns. Individuals using wheelchairs, crutches, and even pedestrians like Anthony Jonas have experienced physical obstacles and injuries. These incidents underscore the need for stricter safety protocols before wider adoption.

Privacy issues add another layer of complexity. The robots’ navigation cameras raise questions about surveillance in public spaces, making transparency and data management essential.

Coco's willingness to engage with residents is a positive step, but public opinion is divided. Cities like San Francisco have implemented restrictions to balance innovation with safety, suggesting that Chicago may need similar regulatory measures.

In short, while the robots offer convenience, their integration into crowded sidewalks demands careful oversight, clear safety guidelines, and open communication with the public.
