The Music Box Theatre in Chicago has announced plans to introduce a new 100-seat third screen at its Southport Avenue location and will take ownership of the Heights Theater in Minneapolis in 2026. The transition will be managed by the theatres long-standing owners, Brody Sheldon and the Schopf Family, in partnership with Ryan Oestreich.

Under new management, the Heights Theater will temporarily close following its annual New Years Day screening of Holiday Inn and is scheduled to reopen on January 9, 2026. The reopening will feature Jim Jarmuschs Father Mother Sister Brother, classic repertory films, and programming curated by the Music Box team.

Longstanding traditions at the Heights Theater, such as the White Christmas screenings, Holiday Inn on New Years Day, the Celebration of Cinema festival, and collaborations with Trylon Cinema, will continue. Enhancements will include late-night Friday and Saturday screenings, Saturday morning films for children, and a renewed silent film series with live organ accompaniment.

The third screen at Music Box Theatre is set to open in summer 2026. The expansion is funded by the owners and supported by a community development grant from the City of Chicago. This additional space will allow for a broader selection of independent, international, and repertory films, along with more opportunities for filmmaker events, festivals, extended runs, and special community presentations.

Analysis: Expanding Cinematic Horizons in Chicago and Minneapolis

The announcement of the Music Box Theatre's expansion in Chicago and the acquisition of the Heights Theater in Minneapolis marks an important step in the continued growth of independent cinema. With plans for a new 100-seat third screen and the revitalization of the Heights Theater under new management, the changes reflect a commitment to preserving the charm and cultural importance of local theaters while expanding their programming to meet evolving audience needs.

In Chicago, the addition of a third screen is a direct response to the growing demand for diverse film offerings. Supported by a community development grant from the City of Chicago, this expansion will provide more opportunities for international films, independent features, and repertory classics. This move aims to increase the accessibility of niche cinema, which often struggles to secure screen space in mainstream theaters. The new screen will also host filmmaker events, festivals, and community-focused presentations, further solidifying the Music Box Theatre as a hub for film lovers in the region.

In Minneapolis, the Heights Theater's transition to new management signifies an exciting era for both the venue and its loyal patrons. While the theater will close temporarily in January 2026 for renovations and a rebranding, it will reopen with a fresh slate of curated programming, including films from acclaimed director Jim Jarmusch. The inclusion of long-standing traditions, such as the White Christmas screenings and the annual Holiday Inn event, ensures that the heart of the Heights Theater’s community spirit remains intact. At the same time, new initiatives like late-night screenings and a renewed silent film series will bring a new dynamic to the theater's offerings.

Overall, these developments signal a positive trend in the preservation and enhancement of independent cinema spaces. The community-focused approach to programming and the ongoing support from both the Music Box Theatre and the Heights Theater's new management are poised to make these venues even more vital to their respective cities’ cultural landscapes. The upcoming changes will likely set a new standard for how community theaters can evolve while still maintaining their historic value.
