  3. Craig Morgan Reveals How His Family Deals with the Pain of Losing Son Jerry, 19, for the Rest of Their Lives

Country singer Craig Morgan shared his thoughts on coping with the death of his 19-year-old son Jerry, who passed away in 2016. Morgan described how he and his family have come to terms with the tragedy, acknowledging that they have to live with the suck for the rest of our lives.

During an appearance on Bunnie Xos Dumb Blonde podcast on November 30, Morgan, 61, explained that he no longer searches for reasons behind his sons death. People often look for why God allowed this to happen, wondering if its connected to charity work or other things. I dont do that. I cant. All you end up doing is chasing justification. For me, there is none. Hes gone, and thats it, he said.

Morgan highlighted that his youngest child summed up the familys approach to their grief: We just have to live with the suck for the rest of our lives. Despite their sorrow, Morgan said his faith remains strong, though he admitted that there are moments when questioning God is inevitable. When you question God, your faith grows because He educates you. Sometimes it just comes through really hard experiences, he explained with emotion.

Jerry was the second oldest of Morgans four children with his wife Karen. He died in a tubing accident on Kentucky Lake in Humphreys County, Tennessee in July 2016. Shortly after, Morgan released the song The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost, which he had not initially planned to release but felt compelled to share.

In honor of Jerry, the family established the Jerry Greer Memorial Scholarship to support future athletes at Dickson County High School, where he had been a standout student. Morgan has said that he and Karen buried Jerry on their property near the family chapel, which features a tribute to him including his favorite number, 13, on the roof overhang.

Morgan described how the family keeps Jerrys memory alive during holidays and family gatherings. We laugh and cry every Christmas, every holiday, every time were together. My wife makes sure to include him in every conversation. My son even suggested the name Jerry for a baby recently, he shared. Jerrys not here physically, but he remains in our hearts and minds and always will.

Reflection on Coping with Tragedy: Craig Morgan's Personal Journey

Country singer Craig Morgan's poignant conversation on Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde podcast sheds light on his personal journey of coping with the loss of his 19-year-old son Jerry. The devastating tragedy, which occurred in 2016 following a tubing accident, has deeply affected Morgan and his family. Yet, the family has found a way to manage their grief, accepting that the pain is something they will live with for the rest of their lives.

Morgan's perspective on grieving and the loss of his son is clear: there are no easy answers or justifications. In his own words, “He’s gone, and that’s it.” This acceptance marks a shift away from seeking meaning in his son’s death and acknowledges that some things in life are beyond explanation. While many might search for reasons behind such tragedies, Morgan explained that trying to justify it only leads to more confusion. His faith, though deeply tested, remains a cornerstone for him, with his belief in God growing stronger through the questioning and painful experiences that life sometimes brings.

What stands out most from Morgan’s reflection is his recognition of the ongoing presence of his son in his family’s lives. Despite Jerry's absence, Morgan emphasizes that Jerry’s memory remains ever-present in their hearts, particularly during family gatherings. The Greer family keeps his spirit alive by reminiscing about Jerry’s life, laughing, and crying together during holidays. Moreover, they have honored him through meaningful acts such as the establishment of the Jerry Greer Memorial Scholarship for future athletes, as well as tributes on their property, including a special tribute in the form of his favorite number, 13, on the family chapel’s roof.

In a world where tragedy often leaves us searching for answers, Morgan’s approach is both heartbreaking and inspiring. His acknowledgment that the pain of loss will never go away is a stark reminder of the complexity of grief. But through faith, family, and the continual honoring of their loved one, the Morgan family demonstrates how, even in the face of immense sorrow, life moves forward. It’s a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of remembrance.
