Derek Emerges as My Favorite New Stranger Things Character, But Concerns Arise Over Unresolved 'Turnbow Trap'

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5, now streaming on Netflix.

The highly anticipated fifth season of Stranger Things has arrived, bringing back a large ensemble cast for the ultimate confrontation with Vecna. Initially, it seemed unnecessary to introduce new characters, and Derek Turnbow appeared to be nothing more than a typical elementary school troublemaker. Yet, Dereks unexpected transformation from a nuisance into a charming presence quickly made him my favorite new addition.

However, one unsettling development in the episode titled The Turnbow Trap leaves a loose end that could have major repercussions in Volume 2.

Episode Breakdown: The Turnbow Trap

In Episode 3, the main characters hatch a risky and illegal plan known as "The Turnbow Trap," which involves drugged pie, breaking into a house, setting booby traps, and temporarily holding the Turnbow family captive. Their goal was to tag a Demogorgon while ensuring the Turnbows' safety.

The scheme succeeds in part, but Derek doesnt consume enough of the drugged pie to stay unconscious. The episode concludes with Derek awake while his parents and sister remain tied up in a barn under threat of an impending attack. Fortunately, no one is killed, and the Demogorgon fails to abduct Derek into the Upside Down. Yet, questions linger about the fate of the rest of the Turnbow family.

The Turnbow Family Situation

Dereks parents and sister were last seen bound and blindfolded in the barn. When Joyce and the others escape with Derek after the Demogorgon attack, the Turnbows are left behind. This unresolved situation suggests possible complications beyond minor interpersonal conflicts.

Potential Consequences in Volume 2

While the Turnbows are not central to the seasons storyline, their predicament could create new obstacles for the main characters. Even if Mr. and Mrs. Turnbow remain unaware of the pie incident, Tina might recall Erica and the syringe, potentially leading to tension or accountability.

In the best-case scenario, the Turnbows might free themselves without remembering enough to retaliate or could be persuaded that their captors had good intentions. However, more concerning outcomes are possible. Dereks abduction may attract military attention, as Hawkins is under heavy surveillance following the Vecna and Demogorgon attacks. This could put the heroes in danger of being pursued as fugitives.

Furthermore, the Turnbows vulnerability in the barn leaves them at risk if monsters from the Upside Down strike again. While their deaths might simplify matters for the protagonists, it would undoubtedly weigh heavily on them emotionally.

What Comes Next?

Volume 2, set to premiere on Christmas Day, will reveal the fate of the Turnbows. Will they survive unharmed, fall victim to Vecna, or become collateral in the armys pursuit? Only the upcoming episodes will answer these questions and show how this unresolved storyline ties into the seasons climactic events.

Volume 2 of Stranger Things Season 5 will be available on December 25 at 8 p.m. ET, with the finale running just over two hours, debuting on New Years Eve.
