Designer Explains His 'Nervousness' in Letting Sydney Sweeney Wear Angelina Jolie's 2004 Oscars Dress

The designer behind Angelina Jolies legendary 2004 Oscars gown has revealed he felt anxious about seeing Sydney Sweeney wear the dress two decades later and was relieved when she pulled it off flawlessly.

Marc Bouwer told the Daily Mail on November 29, I was worried because that dress is so memorable and had received extensive praise. I didnt want to tarnish the legacy of what we created.

Jolie, 50, originally wore the white satin gown with a plunging neckline, reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, to the Academy Awards in 2004. Twenty years later, Sweeney, 28, donned the same dress at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Bouwer explained that the dress completely transformed Jolies image. He recalled her previous Hollywood reputation as rebellious, mentioning the infamous blood vial necklaces she and then-husband Billy Bob Thornton wore. Suddenly, she was seen as elegant and angelic on the red carpet. It completely shifted public perception and cemented the gowns iconic status, he said.

Despite his initial nerves about Sweeney wearing the famous creation, Bouwer was impressed when he saw her. I was nervous, but when I saw how stunning she looked she had her own style but maintained that old Hollywood glamour I adore. It took my breath away. I felt relieved, like, Yes, this works beautifully, he shared.

He also appreciated that Sweeney wasnt attempting to imitate Jolie. They each brought their unique energy and personality to the look, Bouwer added.
