Despite the backlash, I still loved Meghan Markle's holiday special - here's why

When With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration premiered on Netflix, the response from critics was far from glowing. Reviews criticized it for seeming insincere, overly frenetic, and recycling old footage. Some even described it as a bit chaotic and slightly sad. My 11-year-old daughter watched a portion and bluntly said, This girl is annoying, which, for the tween demographic, is practically a rite of passage in judgment.

To the critics, I say: its all in good fun. I tuned in immediatelynot only because I cover the royals and have been following this special since Augustbut also because Im generally supportive of the Sussexes and, as someone who doesnt even celebrate Christmas, I still enjoy festive, cheerful programming. Sure, there were awkward segments. Naomi Osaka seemed low-energy, leaving Meghan to carry much of the enthusiasm. Some moments veered into overly cheerful positivity, and it likely didnt charm the royal family. Yet, for me, the show had undeniable appeal. Here are four reasons why:

1. Harrys Brief Appearance

Prince Harry makes a short cameo, but its enough to captivate. His charm is effortlesswhether discussing vegetables he dislikes or sharing trivia like his tendency to sweat when eating spicy food. His voice alone could hold your attention for hours, and his presence adds an undeniable spark to the special.

2. Meghans Impressive Gift-Wrapping

Unlike my usual haphazard gift-wrapping, Meghans segment offers clever techniques that make even oddly shaped presents look polished. She demonstrates stylish methods, including wrapping a wine bottle in a thrifted scarfa move thats both elegant and environmentally conscious.

3. The Montecito Lifestyle Inspiration

While I live on the same California coastline, Meghans home exudes a level of calm, luxury, and aesthetic perfection far beyond my own. Her style and natural beauty are striking, and her approach to holiday preparation inspires viewers to add thoughtful touches and wholesome experiences to family life, even if only aspirationally.

4. Ultimate Cozy Vibes

The special radiates warmth and comfort, reminiscent of a televised yule log. Its not high artit doesnt try to bebut it provides a soothing, festive atmosphere with craft tutorials, cheerful moments, and, of course, Harry. Its easy to enjoy, even while multitasking.

Despite the harsh criticism, eye-rolls from social media, and my own childs teasing, I found the holiday special genuinely charming, cozy, and inspiring. Its a festive experience worth watching on its own terms.
