Detroit Finally Unveils Statue of Iconic Movie Character

Detroit has finally revealed a statue honoring the legendary movie character RoboCop, placing it in one of the citys most frequented public markets. The long-anticipated project, which has been in the works for over 15 years, culminated with the installation of the 3,500-pound bronze figure on Wednesday.

The city of Detroit, famously depicted in the 1987 film starring RoboCop, now proudly displays the statue at Eastern Market along Russell Street, just south of Mack Avenue. The sculpture rests on a 1,500-pound pedestal and stands more than 11 feet tall. Renowned sculptor George Gikas, working with his team at Venus Bronze Works, created the impressive piece.

The concept for the statue first emerged in 2011 when Detroit filmmaker and designer Brandon Walley, alongside the arts nonprofit Imagination Station, initiated a fundraising campaign for the project. Over $67,000 was raised to bring the vision to life.

The idea gained attention after a fan tweeted to then-Mayor Dave Bing, suggesting that Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & RoboCop would kick Rockys butt. Hes a GREAT ambassador for Detroit. Although initially rejected, the proposal continued to gain momentum through Walleys efforts.

Gikas completed the sculpture in 2017, but its placement remained uncertain for several years. The breakthrough came when Jim Toscanos company acquired a building at Eastern Market, an open-air hub for produce, shopping, and entertainment, providing a permanent home for RoboCop.

Triumph. Relief. Its a bit of all of it, Walley reflected on the unveiling. Were excited about what the statue will bring to the market and to Detroiters.

RoboCops enduring cultural impact was recognized when Empire included the character in its 2024 list of The 35 Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Characters, ranking him at number 20.
