DGA Plans Meeting with Netflix to Address "Significant Concerns" About Potential Warner Bros. Discovery Acquisition

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced plans to meet with Netflix to address concerns related to the streaming giants possible acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Following reports on Thursday night that Netflix had emerged as the winning bidder for the historic media company and would begin exclusive negotiations, a guild representative emphasized that this development raises significant concerns for the DGA.

A thriving and competitive industry that nurtures creativity and provides fair opportunities for talent is vital to protecting the careers and creative rights of directors and their teams, the DGA statement read. We will meet with Netflix to share our concerns and gain insight into their plans for the companys future. Until this review is complete, we will refrain from further public comment.

The DGA is the first Hollywood union to publicly respond to Netflixs potential takeover, but it is expected that other industry groups may follow. Previously, the Writers Guilds of America East and West issued a joint statement opposing any merger involving WBD and Paramount, citing risks to writers, consumers, and market competition.

Thursday also saw Paramount intensify efforts to counter Netflixs bid and secure a deal for Warner Bros. Discovery itself. Sources report that Netflix offered approximately $28 per share, predominantly in cash. WBD initiated the sale process in October after receiving three consecutive offers from Paramount, aiming to finalize a transaction by mid-to-late December.
