Dick Van Dyke, the legendary actor and singer, shared memories of his friendship with Walt Disney, suggesting he might be the last person alive who had a genuine connection with the Disney icon.
At a Vandy High Tea charity event held at his California home on November 30, Van Dyke, 99, engaged with attendees through Q&A sessions, sing-along performances, and reflections on his long career. The event raised funds for The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the upcoming Dick Van Dyke Museum.
Reflecting on his relationship with Disney, Van Dyke said, I got to know Walt pretty well, and we just got along. We decided that emotionally we were both 13 years old, and that's why we loved creating entertainment for children.
The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star described Disney as a big kid, full of energy and enthusiasm. I just loved him.
He added that although they sometimes had differing political views, it never affected their friendship. Van Dyke humorously noted, Yeah, he was a wonderful guy. He just smoked too much! Doggone.
Van Dyke first met Disney in the early 1960s, when he was in his mid-30s and Disney in his early 60s. He recalled how the meeting eventually led to his casting in Mary Poppins, despite author P.L. Travers initially thinking he wasnt suited for the role. Van Dyke explained that after expressing his belief that there wasnt enough quality entertainment for children, Disney personally offered him the part.
Van Dyke, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on December 13, famously played Bert, the cheerful chimney sweep, opposite Julie Andrews in the 1964 classic. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Andrews and accolades for its original score and songs.
Throughout his life, Van Dyke has frequently remarked on the similarities he shared with Disney, particularly their childlike spirit and passion for bringing joy to audiences. During interviews, he often highlighted their mutual understanding and the excitement he felt while seeing Disneys watercolor sketches of the films scenes.
