For the film Hamneta reimagined story of Agnes (Anne Hathaway in real life) and William Shakespeare's family, focusing on their marriage and the death of their 11-year-old soncostume designer Malgosia Turzanska embraced emotional storytelling over strict historical accuracy, with full support from Oscar-winning director Chlo Zhao.

Chlo immediately emphasized that we werent making a museum piece, but telling a story, Turzanska, known for The Green Knight and X, explained. Drawing inspiration from period clothing as a foundation, she developed unique looks for Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal that reflected their characters, Agnes and Will, rather than historical figures.

Agnes Fiery Wardrobe

Turzanska designed Agnes costumes to echo the characters vibrant spirit. I envisioned her as a living, beating heart, deeply connected to nature, she shared. This led to dynamic reds and oranges, which gradually muted to rusts, browns, and grays as Agnes faced grief and loss.

For one key outfit, Turzanska used the modularity of Elizabethan clothing, incorporating a bodice with interchangeable skirts and sleeves made from bark cloth. The leather tie on her wrist ages with her, and shes unafraid to get muddy, tending to herbs and her craft, Turzanska noted, highlighting the practicality and authenticity in Agnes appearance.

Wills Subtle Grays

Paul Mescals wardrobe reflects Will Shakespeares tense relationship with his father. Their home is dark, so the costumes remain in grayscale to avoid drawing attention, said Turzanska. The inner jacket features laser-scratched leather symbolizing emotional wounds, while the outer jackets elephant skin texture foreshadows the burial shroud he wears later in the film.

In addition to costume details, Mescal adjusted his earring to match historical depictions and replaced the traditional dagger on his belt with a quill, saying, I dont need a dagger, all I need is this.

The Ghost of Hamlet

Turzanskas favorite costume was Wills ghost ensemble in the films climactic scene. The cape was inspired by the shroud in which Hamnet is wrapped after his death, she explained. The design, incorporating clay and linen, mirrored the anachronistic style used throughout the play within the movie. Flat latex paint connected the historical characters to a contemporary audience, making the ghost feel both timeless and immediate.

Through her work, Turzanska transformed historical references, natural textures, and emotional depth into costumes that vividly bring Hamnets story to life.

Analysis: Costume Design in "Hamnet" – Emotional Depth and Creative Liberty

The costume design for *Hamnet*, as envisioned by Malgosia Turzanska, prioritizes emotional resonance over strict historical accuracy, which aligns with the film's broader approach to storytelling. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the film is not aimed at creating a museum piece, but rather at crafting a visceral narrative about grief, family, and loss. The design choices reflect this intention, infusing characters' wardrobes with symbolic elements that represent their emotional journeys rather than adhering strictly to the period’s fashion.

Turzanska’s work on Agnes’ costumes stands out as a prime example of this creative approach. Her vibrant wardrobe choices, moving from fiery reds and oranges to somber browns and grays, reflect Agnes’ inner turmoil as she navigates her grief. The use of modular Elizabethan clothing, with its interchangeable components, underscores Agnes' practical, grounded nature, while still conveying her connection to the natural world.

In contrast, the costumes of Paul Mescal’s Will Shakespeare serve to reflect his internal struggles. The choice of subtle grays and textures that symbolize emotional wounds provides a visual metaphor for Will’s complex relationship with his father. The ghost costume, a pivotal moment in the film, merges historical references with contemporary design techniques, bringing out the emotional weight of Will’s character in a timeless, impactful manner.

Ultimately, Turzanska’s designs serve as a key storytelling tool in *Hamnet*, using clothing to articulate complex emotions and relationships. The costumes are not just a reflection of history; they are a reflection of the characters themselves, made to resonate deeply with modern audiences while staying grounded in the narrative's emotional core.
