Dua Lipa Ends World Tour in Mexico With Selena Tribute: ‘I Feel a Very Special Connection’

On the final night of her Radical Optimism Tour, Dua Lipa paid tribute to the legendary Selena Quintanilla at Mexico Citys GNP Seguros Stadium. The British pop star performed Amor Prohibido, honoring the Queen of Tejano music, after a week of three sold-out shows in the iconic venue.

After completing 92 shows worldwide, Lipa shared an emotional connection with Selena, highlighting their shared dual heritage. Speaking in Spanish to an audience of 65,000, she explained, I feel a very special connection with this artist, as she belonged to two places at once. I identify deeply with this, being both Albanian and English, just as she was Mexican and American.

Born in London to Albanian-Kosovar parents in 1995the same year Selena passed awayLipa embraced her Albanian roots in 2022 by obtaining Albanian citizenship. Selena, meanwhile, was a U.S.-born singer of Mexican descent.

While she did not have guest performers for this final show, earlier in the week Lipa shared the stage with Fher Olvera from Man for a duet of Oye Mi Amor. Fans expressed their appreciation, cheering, Dua, hermana, ya eres mexicana! celebrating her homage to Mexican culture.

During her first night back in Mexico, Lipa surprised attendees with a rendition of Consuelo Velzquezs classic Bsame Mucho, echoing Luis Miguels 1997 version. The tribute was later acknowledged by Selenas legacy through a social media post featuring their images.

On the same day as the World Cup draw in Washington D.C., a fan presented Lipa with a Mexican National Team jersey. The team shared a snapshot of her with the jersey on social media, celebrating the moment with excitement for the upcoming tournament.

Lipas visit included special experiences for her fans: a pop-up taqueria in a popular neighborhood, the first Latin American edition of her digital newsletter Service 95 with book recommendations and author interviews, and personal enjoyment of the citys culture and cuisine with friends and family.

During her farewell at the three Mexico City shows, which drew a total of 195,000 attendees, Lipa expressed gratitude in Spanish: Thank you so much for welcoming us with open arms and for this energy that I will carry with me until next time.

The Radical Optimism Tour began in Singapore in November 2024 and will continue across 2025 in Australia, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Lipas performances frequently included surprise covers of local artists songs, fostering unique connections with audiences around the world.
