  3. Endgame Entertainment to Produce 'Digital Dunkirk' Documentary Directed by David Check, and Working on Adaptation of Narrative Feature

Endgame Entertainment is set to produce Digital Dunkirk, a documentary capturing the remarkable grassroots operation that evacuated thousands from Kabul during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. In addition to the documentary, the company is also developing a narrative feature based on the same events, producing both projects in tandem.

Both films will highlight the real-life coalition of U.S. veterans, federal agents, aid workers, and private citizens who independently organized as Kabul fell, coordinating what became the largest unofficial civilian evacuation in U.S. history. What started as informal discussions quickly turned into an extensive, improvised network of digital command centers spanning multiple continents and time zones, using encrypted communication tools.

The initiative, known as Digital Dunkirk, was volunteer-led, operating without official authorization and often navigating complex legal and ethical challenges. The projects aim to explore the moral ambiguities of modern conflict and focus on the human stories behind the headlines, showing how ordinary individuals and veterans stepped in to save lives when official institutions were overwhelmed.

David Check, the award-winning director of Leavenworth and 30 for 30, will direct the documentary, with his production company, Check Point Productions, collaborating with Endgame. E.C. Browne, a veteran of Task Force Argo, is attached as executive producer. The scripted feature is written by Browne and Katharine Werner, known for Cede and The Adjustment Bureau.

Endgame Entertainment has an extensive production portfolio, including over 50 films, numerous television series, more than 20 Broadway productions, and various other entertainment properties. Currently, the company is in post-production on Cowboy, directed by Cameron Duddy and starring Ben Foster, Gabe Basso, and Rudy Pankow, as well as producing a Broadway adaptation of Silver Linings Playbook. Recent credits include Netflixs Murder Mystery films and the Emmy-winning series Last Chance U along with its spin-off LCU: Basketball.

Analysis: The Untold Story of Digital Dunkirk

As someone following the developments closely, I see Endgame Entertainment’s dual approach—documentary and narrative feature—as a significant effort to preserve an overlooked chapter of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The focus on the grassroots coalition of veterans, federal agents, aid workers, and private citizens underscores how ordinary individuals took extraordinary action when official channels faltered.

The scale and coordination of the Digital Dunkirk operation highlight a unique phenomenon in modern conflict: decentralized, volunteer-led digital networks that operate across continents under intense pressure. This project provides an opportunity to explore the moral and legal complexities faced by those who acted independently, often navigating gray areas to save lives.

With David Check directing and E.C. Browne contributing executive insight, the films promise authenticity grounded in firsthand experience. Beyond the historical account, the stories captured could reshape public understanding of civilian-led interventions in crisis zones, emphasizing human courage and ethical dilemmas rather than political narratives.

Endgame’s production experience, ranging from major films to Broadway adaptations, suggests that both projects will balance factual precision with compelling storytelling. In doing so, Digital Dunkirk may become a benchmark for how modern history is documented and dramatized, offering audiences a nuanced view of heroism and initiative amid chaos.
