The Homo Faber Biennale, Venices premier event celebrating modern craftsmanship, has announced that British multidisciplinary artist Es Devlin will take the helm as artistic director for its 2026 edition. Devlin has conceptualized a new immersive experience titled An Island of Light, which will be curated by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship.
The Michelangelo Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Johann Rupert and Franco Cologni, is dedicated to promoting and preserving exceptional artisanal skills across various disciplines. The fourth edition of the Biennale will take place on San Giorgio Maggiore island in collaboration with Fondazione Giorgio Cini, scheduled for September 2026.
Devlins installations and kinetic sculptures have been showcased worldwide in museums, galleries, theaters, opera houses, and stadiums. Her recent Library of Light installation at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan attracted nearly 200,000 visitors during Salone del Mobile. Alberto Cavalli, executive director of the Michelangelo Foundation, praised Devlin as a visionary and generous artist, highlighting her unique ability to define spaces while respecting their essence.
Planning for the project began in London a year ago. Devlins concept of An Island of Light reflects the idea of an island not as isolation, but as a component that interacts with its surroundings. Light plays a central role both physically and metaphorically, symbolizing the foundations mission to illuminate and support master artisans. Cavalli described light as the energy that enables transformation.
The installation will feature 12 to 13 distinct areas, each representing a unique theme. One space will focus on water, acknowledging its historical significance and humanitys tradition of crafting vessels for its storage. The design will include a half-moon motif alongside various vases and containers. The Biennale aims to display over 500 objects sourced from more than 70 countries, with careful attention to color and design coherence. Selection of these pieces is expected to conclude by late April, after which logistical preparations will commence.
Devlin will also participate in a public discussion in Miami about her current work, Library of Us, a monumental rotating bookcase installation displayed on Miami Beach during Art Basel. Her artistry bridges conceptual design and hands-on creation, reflecting a deep respect for human craftsmanship and dignity.
Her extensive portfolio spans theatrical and entertainment projects, including Lady Gagas 2025 Coachella show, The Weeknds world tour, and the 2022 Super Bowl halftime performance featuring numerous artists. For the 2026 Biennale, around 2,000 visitors per day are expected to explore An Island of Light, with eight on-site restaurants enhancing the immersive experience. Cavalli emphasized that the focus is on the engagement and inspiration of visitors, encouraging them to appreciate and collect handcrafted works that are built to last, rather than disposable products.
