Brazilian cinema has shone brightly in 2025, marked by Walter Salles I'm Still Here earning the country's first Oscar, and Kleber Mendona Filho receiving Best Director and Best Actor at Cannes for The Secret Agent. Yet the year truly began with Gabriel Mascaros O ltimo azul (The Blue Trail), winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale.

Set in a near-future Brazil, The Blue Trail opens with a seemingly well-meaning government broadcast declaring that the elderly deserve care and respect, promoting the idea that the future is for everyone. The state honors older citizens with medallions and plaques marking them as national living heritages.

But the reality is harsher: an ageist regime enforces early retirement, relocating seniors to a secluded colony, while younger generations are pushed toward productivity. Noncompliance can result in neighbors reporting citizens, who are then collected by the Wrinkle Wagon and sent to the Colony. Tereza (Denise Weinberg), aged 77, believed she had a few more years before relocation, but a lowered age threshold of 75 places her in violation without her knowledge. Under her daughters guardianship, she loses basic autonomy, including making purchases and continuing her factory job processing alligator meat. When told, The government wants you to rest, she defiantly replies, Why would I want to rest? I want to live.

With her relocation imminent, Tereza pursues one final wish: to take her first plane ride. Her daughter Joana (Clarissa Pinheiro) denies her ticket purchase, prompting Tereza to find another way to seize her last moments of freedom. She discovers a light aircraft in Itacoatiara and boards a riverboat with captain Cadu (Rodrigo Santoro). During their journey, Cadu finds a rare blue drool snail, whose hallucinogenic slime offers visions of the future.

The Blue Trail is a deeply moving, poetic exploration of aging and autonomy. Mascaro balances dystopian critique with tender storytelling, avoiding heavy-handed dramatization. Unlike his neon-lit, religiously themed Divine Love, this film imagines a plausible near-future Brazil, hinted at subtly through everyday details, while the Colony itself remains largely unseen.

Denise Weinbergs performance brings Tereza to life, revealing vulnerability beneath her determined exterior. Her journey intersects with Roberta (Miriam Socarrs), a free-spirited nun who purchased her freedom, emphasizing the films themes of rebellion and personal agency. Mascaros tale of resistance recalls the works of Shhei Imamura and Chie Hayakawa, but stands out by highlighting the capacity of the elderly to challenge oppressive systems.

While late-life narratives often risk sentimentality or bleakness, The Blue Trail balances surreal beauty, humor, and social critique. Riverscapes, unexpected adventures, and hallucinatory experiences enrich the narrative, creating a cinematic experience both moving and provocative. The film serves as a poignant warning about societys marginalization of older generations.

Amidst the success, Brazils film industry faces bureaucratic and political hurdles, threatening future momentum. Nevertheless, the countrys cinematic achievements continue to offer audiences internationally remarkable stories, beginning with The Blue Trail. The film is now showing in select European cinemas, with a U.S. release planned for next year. The Secret Agent will see a wide European release in 2026.
