Israel has been officially confirmed to participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, despite ongoing debate over its involvement due to the conflict in Gaza and accusations of vote manipulation favoring Israel in this year's contest. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which oversees Eurovision, stated that a significant majority at its general assembly agreed that the contest should proceed as planned, with additional safeguards in place.
Instead of a direct vote on Israels participation, representatives from 37 countries voted anonymously on whether they accepted the revised rules introduced last month. The outcome showed 65% approval, 23% opposition, and 10% abstentions. Broadcasters from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark expressed support for the contest under the new framework.
Austria's ORF, the host broadcaster for next year, welcomed the decision. ORF director-general Roland Weissman emphasized that Eurovision is a broadcaster-led event, not a government matter, and highlighted the importance of maintaining cultural dialogue and upholding democratic values within public broadcasting.
Israels president, Isaac Herzog, reacted positively on social media, stressing the importance of cultural exchange and international friendship through music. However, the decision to include Israel has prompted four countries to withdraw from Eurovision 2026.
Countries Withdrawing
- Ireland: RT cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the loss of civilian lives as reasons for non-participation.
- The Netherlands: AVROTROS stated that involvement conflicted with the organizations core values, noting that cultural unity should not come at any cost.
- Slovenia: RTVSLO withdrew in alignment with principles of peace, equality, and respect, highlighting the impact of the Gaza conflict on children.
- Spain: RTVE will not broadcast the contest or semi-finals, criticizing the EBUs decision-making process and citing human rights as a priority. Spains culture minister supported the boycott, marking the countrys first Eurovision absence since 1961.
Other major broadcasters, including Germany and France, have confirmed their participation regardless of Israel's inclusion. The BBC has also committed to airing the contest, supporting the collective decision made by the EBU members.
Whats Next?
The controversy has intensified following the lack of a direct vote on Israel. Eurovision expert Paul Jordan described the situation as increasingly divisive, noting the contradiction between the contests slogan United by Music and the political disputes affecting it.
Some broadcasters, such as Icelands RV, have yet to finalize their participation. Broadcasters have until mid-December to confirm, with a final list of participants expected by Christmas. Concerns exist that the disputes surrounding Israels involvement may impact viewership for the 2026 show.
The 70th Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Austria from 12-16 May 2026. Discussions over boycotts and political influence continue to shape the conversation around the event, highlighting the ongoing tension between the contests cultural goals and geopolitical realities.
