Exclusive: Cara Buono from "Stranger Things" shares unused details from Karen's Demogorgon Attack Scene

Cara Buono takes center stage in Stranger Things season 5 as Karen Wheeler, showing remarkable bravery while protecting her daughter, Holly, from a Demogorgon inside the family home. Speaking about the Vol. 1 episodes released on November 26, Buono shared insights into some parts of the scene that were ultimately removed from the final cut.

"The end of her storyline isn't about transforming into someone new," Buono explains. "It's about revealing the strength and courage she's had all along."

Buono, 54, has portrayed Karen Wheeler, mother to Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Holly (Nell Fisher), since the shows first season. In this seasons first volume, she notes that Karen evolves from a quiet, understated protector into a fierce action figure, wielding a broken wine bottle against the monstrous threat.

Episode 2 highlights Karens courageous stand as she defends Holly, hiding underwater in a bathtub before taking on the creature from the Upside Down. Buono describes the scene as thrilling: "It was incredible to see her fully embrace this fight, using whatever she had to protect her daughter."

When preparing for the intense sequence, Buono drew inspiration from iconic female action heroes, such as Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis. Fans have observed parallels between Karens line, "Stay away from my daughter," and Weavers famous words in Alien. Buono confirms she even filmed a take echoing that line, but it was not included in the episode.

She also remarks on comparisons to Mrs. Weasley defending Ginny in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. "Its delightful to see Karen compared to someone so unexpectedly heroic," Buono says.

The actress reflects on the audiences reaction: "People, especially parents, have told me how emotional that scene was for them. Theres also a real appetite for seeing women over 40 step into powerful, commanding roles on screen."

Buono emphasizes that Karens arc has been building throughout the series: "All these seasons, shes been alert, sensing danger, and trying to keep her family safe. This season, all that vigilance finally manifests in action."

Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 5 is currently streaming on Netflix. Volume 2 will be available on December 25, with the series finale arriving on December 31.
