Shooting for the independent drama Above Ground is scheduled to commence this Thursday in Pasadena. The film represents the feature-length directorial debut of Matt Kelsey, who also wrote and stars in the project.
The story follows Tom, a once-successful writer who withdraws from life after a tragic loss. As he navigates his isolation and confronts past memories, he discovers unexpected connections and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately learning what it truly means to live again.
Kelsey described the screenplay as inspired by the style of Chekhov, stating, No superheroes, car chases, or action set piecesjust the realities of how we love, grieve, and move forward. Above Ground is my tribute to loss and hope.
A graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Kelseys short film Her Place (2021) received multiple festival awards. The cast of Above Ground also features Christian Zuber (Fly Me to the Moon, The Morning Show), Marion Kerr (Her Place, Criminal Minds), Craig Thomas (Source Code, Im Not There), and Austin Woods (American Horror Story, American Horror Stories).
This is a heros journey at its heart, Kelsey explained. Tom is like an Odysseus without a home to return tohis home is his late wife. Its a personal reflection on mental health struggles, showing that its human to feel broken, and that its okay to not be okay.
Producer Viselman joined the project under his company, Kenn Viselman Presents, calling it a rare, raw, and heartfelt story. One moment you confront deep loss, the next you feel the joy of being alive. Its a truly special film.
The cinematography is led by Charles Schner (Captain America: Civil War, The Big Lebowski, American Horror Story), with Dallin Burns (Zack Snyders Justice League, Rebel Moon 1 & 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2) handling the music. Johnny Wujek (Legendary, Project Runway All Stars) serves as costume designer and art director, and Michael Yanivich (Waltzing with Brando, Face Off) is editing the film.
Analysis: A Grounded Story of Loss and Resilience
The upcoming independent film, Above Ground, directed by Matt Kelsey, offers a raw and intimate portrayal of grief, mental health, and the journey of self-discovery. Drawing inspiration from the works of Chekhov, Kelsey delivers a character-driven narrative devoid of typical action-packed sequences. This grounded approach is refreshing in an era dominated by superhero franchises and CGI-heavy blockbusters. Instead, Kelsey invites viewers to witness the painful yet transformative process of healing through the eyes of his protagonist, Tom.
Kelsey's choice to focus on a hero's journey rooted in personal loss rather than external conflict speaks volumes about the evolving nature of storytelling in contemporary cinema. While Tom’s isolation might seem inward-focused, the film’s universal themes of love, loss, and hope will resonate with many. The idea that it’s "okay to not be okay" challenges traditional portrayals of mental health, emphasizing the importance of vulnerability and connection as a means of coping with tragedy.
In terms of production, the involvement of experienced filmmakers like cinematographer Charles Schner and music composer Dallin Burns suggests that the film will be visually and sonically captivating. Their previous work on projects like Captain America: Civil War and Rebel Moon showcases their versatility in handling both large-scale blockbusters and more intimate narratives. With the backing of producer Viselman, who describes the story as "rare, raw, and heartfelt," Above Ground is poised to offer a unique cinematic experience that transcends genre conventions.
Ultimately, this film may not break box office records, but it has the potential to leave a lasting emotional impact on its audience, reminding us of the healing power of confronting our deepest wounds and finding meaning in the face of overwhelming loss.
