Explanation of Health Problems of HGTV Star Tarek El Moussa

Over a decade ago, Tarek El Moussa faced life-altering news: he was diagnosed with cancer. Eventually, he discovered he had two distinct types of the disease, requiring multiple surgeries and intensive treatments. His health struggles continued less than a year later when he suffered a painful injury that compounded his challenges.

The Lump That Led to a Cancer Diagnosis

In 2013, viewers of Flip or Flop noticed a lump on El Moussas neck, prompting him to seek medical advice. Although he had previously consulted his primary doctor, he was only given allergy medication and nasal spray. Following a second opinion, a biopsy revealed atypical results, leading to exploratory surgery that confirmed stage 3 thyroid cancer.

Upon reviewing past medical records, El Moussa found an overlooked irregular testicle exam. A subsequent ultrasound revealed testicular cancer, adding a second diagnosis to his health battle.

Treatment Journey

El Moussa underwent surgery to remove his entire thyroid and affected lymph nodes, followed by radioactive iodine therapy to eradicate remaining cancer cells. This treatment required him to avoid contact with his then-wife and young daughter due to radiation exposure risks. His testicular cancer was treated with another surgical procedure.

The recovery process was physically and mentally taxing. El Moussa struggled with hormone imbalances, fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, anxiety, and heart issues while adjusting to thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Remission and Recovery

Today, Tarek El Moussa is in remission from both cancers. He confirmed that more than ten years have passed since his diagnosis, and he is thriving along with his children.

Additional Health Challenges

Less than a year after completing cancer treatment, El Moussa suffered a severe back injury, damaging several discs and pinching his sciatic nerve. He endured significant pain, taking multiple painkillers daily, before undergoing back surgery. The procedure led to complications, including a swollen urethra that required a week-long hospital stay to correct. He experienced difficulty walking for a year and described the following four years as extremely challenging.

During his cancer recovery, El Moussa was prescribed testosterone, which led to a temporary addiction and intense mood swings. He has spoken candidly about the emotional and relational struggles this caused, affecting his family life and personal well-being.

Author's Commentary: The Long Road of Resilience

Tarek El Moussa’s journey highlights the importance of vigilance in personal health. What began as a seemingly minor lump led to the discovery of two distinct cancers, showing how early detection and second opinions can be lifesaving.

His treatment underscores the physical and emotional toll of cancer. Surgeries, radioactive therapy, and hormone management are not just medical procedures—they reshape daily life, family interactions, and mental well-being. El Moussa’s candidness about these struggles adds valuable context to the public understanding of cancer recovery.

The subsequent back injury and complications illustrate how health challenges can compound, requiring resilience beyond the initial diagnosis. El Moussa’s experience also draws attention to the potential risks of prescribed treatments, such as hormone therapy, and the importance of monitoring both physical and mental effects.

Ultimately, his remission after more than a decade serves as a testament to medical advances, patient advocacy, and personal perseverance. It is a reminder that recovery is multifaceted, encompassing not only physical healing but also emotional and familial reconciliation.
