Family Discovers Couple Dead Hours from Home After Thanksgiving Drive Took Wrong Turn: Exclusive

Linda and Gary Lightfoot, both in their 80s, were reported missing after leaving a Thanksgiving celebration in the Texas Panhandle and failing to return to their home in Lubbock, Texas. Authorities discovered their bodies and vehicle five days later in a remote area of Quay County, New Mexico.

The couples relative, Barbara Scheller, told PEOPLE that the family believes the Lightfoots somehow got turned around during the drive and became lost. According to Scheller, the couple had traveled the route many times and had left their cell phones at home.

The Quay County Sheriffs Office stated that deputies were called to a ranch west of Tucumcari, N.M., on December 2 following a report of a potential sighting of the couples car. When officers arrived, they found an immobile vehicle at the edge of a pasture, which was confirmed to belong to Linda, 81, and Gary, 82. Tragically, both were found deceased at the scene. Investigations are ongoing.

The drive from Tucumcari to Lubbock usually takes about three hours. The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed it has the couples remains, but autopsy results, which will determine cause and manner of death, could take approximately three months to complete.

The family remembered Linda and Gary as "genuine and kind people" with a "legacy of love and devotion." Gary, a military veteran, previously worked as a law enforcement officer for the Lamb County Sheriffs Office and as Littlefield Police Chief. He was also a skilled wood craftsman, creating carved farm animals, crosses, and personalized anniversary gifts. Linda had a career in oil, gas, and banking, and enjoyed giving cards and gifts for all occasions. She kept a fireplace burning year-round and cherished every day.

The couple were active in their church and valued their connections with neighbors, friends, and family. They are survived by their son, Gregg, Lindas sister Barbara, and her husband Waylon, along with nieces and nephews.

The family expressed gratitude to the authorities involved in the search and highlighted the importance of being prepared while traveling, even on familiar routes. They added, Although it was not the outcome we had hoped for, it is evident everything that could be done was done. The outpouring of love and support from so many people across Texas, New Mexico, and other states encouraged us. Thank you for your love and prayers. We will cherish the memories we shared.
