Filmmaker awarded 3 honors in U.S. while Iran sentences him to prison

NEW YORK Jafar Panahi experienced an emotional whirlwind on Monday at the 35th annual Gotham Awards. Just hours before the ceremony, the acclaimed Iranian director learned he had been sentenced in absentia to one year in prison, prohibited from leaving Iran for two years, and barred from participating in political or social organizations.

Panahis attorney, Mostafa Nili, confirmed plans to appeal the charges, which accuse the filmmaker of propaganda against the system. Despite living in Tehran with his family, Panahi has been traveling internationally to promote his latest film, the Palme dOr-winning It Was Just an Accident, inspired by his experiences as a political prisoner in Iran.

At the Gotham Awards, Panahi arrived with his interpreter, Sheida Dayani, skipping interviews and heading directly to the reception. He walked the red carpet ahead of numerous Hollywood stars including Rihanna, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B. Jordan, and Adam Sandler.

Panahis history with Irans authorities has been fraught. In 2010, he received a six-year prison sentence, a 20-year ban on filmmaking, and restrictions on travel. Despite this, he continued creating films, enduring imprisonment in 2010 and 2022, with both stints involving harsh interrogations and torture. After a hunger strike in 2023, all restrictions were lifted, allowing him to resume his work.

When asked about the new sentence, Panahi responded with laughter, emphasizing that he needed to consult his lawyer first. Earlier this year, he expressed that he did not fear prison and remained deeply connected to his homeland, stating he could never permanently leave Iran despite other filmmakers working in exile.

At the ceremony, Panahi was the first to accept an award. Presenters Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, and Chase Infiniti introduced him as he received the award for best original screenplay. He dedicated it to filmmakers in Iran and globally who continue to create under adversity, remarking, I hope this tribute honors those who persist in their craft despite obstacles.

It Was Just an Accident follows former political prisoners attempting to confront a suspected interrogator, uncertain if he is indeed the person who tortured them. Panahi also won awards for best international feature and best director, celebrating alongside fellow independent filmmakers with heartfelt joy and enthusiasm.

The Gotham Awards, known for spotlighting visionary talent, have become a platform for recognizing Panahis work. With three wins, he has gained significant attention, positioning him as a strong contender for international recognition and potential Academy Award nominations, including best director and best pictureachievements that would mark historic firsts for Iranian cinema. Mondays support underscores the global filmmaking community rallying behind Panahi amid his legal challenges in Iran.
