"So, Ser Duncan the Tall, how skilled a knight are you?" This is the challenge the modest hedge knight, portrayed by Peter Claffey, will soon face. The latest trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, released today, promises intense battles and bloodshed ahead.
The upcoming Game of Thrones prequel is set nearly a century before the events of the original series, in the quaint town of Ashford Meadow in the Reach. Here, Dunk, affectionately nicknamed "the Lunk," who once served a deceased hedge knight, seeks to earn money by competing in a tournament as a knight in his own right.
The trailer introduces key figures Dunk encounters on his journey. Theres Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a bald-headed boy eager to become Dunk's squire. Then comes Prince Aerion "Brightflame" Targaryen (Finn Bennett), a royal with a dangerous grudge against Dunk, prompting Prince Baelor (Bertie Carvel), Aerions uncle and heir to the Iron Throne, to question Dunks knightly abilities.
The story unfolds long after the events of House of the Dragon, which contextualizes the fearful reputation of the Targaryens among common folk, described as "incestuous" and "tyrants." Dunk and Egg's adventure offers a closer look at this dynamic.
The trailer highlights Dunks central challenge: chaotic jousting sequences resembling full-scale battles. Fans familiar with George R. R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg will recognize this as the Trial of Seven, a pivotal event in the story.
George R. R. Martin co-created and executive-produced the series alongside showrunner Ira Parker, a former writer on House of the Dragon. Season 1 will adapt Martins first Dunk and Egg novella, The Hedge Knight, and will premiere on Jan. 18 with six half-hour episodes. Season 2, based on The Sworn Sword, is slated for 2027.
